Question about 1983 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

83 toyota pickup s10 auto, usually will shift into overdrived after driving a few blocks, but quit shifing mostly a few days ago. tried changing plug and spark wires as it was spark jumping and rough idle, thought it might have decreased vacuum, which might have affected shifting

when problem first came up a few yrs ago, looked at toyota info at dealer, and started squirting wd 40 on all the linkage at the firewall and on right side of carb. seemedd to work for few months then would use wd again. last week shifting became intermediate into fourth gear which is overdrive, but this time squiring didt work. then as was getting ready to flush tranny, shifted into od for the trip, then when started again, no od.....any idea what i could have been squirting to make it shift??????? if i can pinpoint that can try focusing on that point. wondering if it could be vacuum leak from an old rubber hose in that area of which there are a bunch....

to complicate this, i found the tranny pan bolts ...a couple, are sheared off, but pan doesnt leak. got a new tran filter, but to pull the pan is going to be a real project right now, so looking for other solutions until i get time and spaceand patience to attack the pan. cant risk screwing it up and not having a driver right now. Thanks for your input.

There are many things that can cause the tranny to not shift properly and Vacume is one of them.

The ECM
tranny sensors
low on fluid
tranny filter
dirty/used tranny fliud
loose linkage
worn transmission bands
valve body malfunction on the tranny
speed sensor

here are 90% of them. You just need to start with the basics first like tranny fluid and fliter. drop the pan and see whats there. If you have metal shavings its the bands or gears. while you have it apart remove the valve body and put a rebuild kit on it. If the valve body id gunked or leaking you can have much of the same issues.

Well now I know all the info yes I do believe its a vacuum leak. WD 40 makes rubber swell. So the thing is that now the rubber has deteriorated or split so far it wont let it shift. You need to trace the lines out on that side. ANY vacuum leak will cause this. Its hard to say or even pin point what one is the problem. Hell just go to the auto parts store buy a roll of vacuum tubing and start replacing one at a time.

Can I use a 95 4 runner engine in my 83 Toyota pickup.

Not likely. The 1995 engine will most likely be designed for computerized control with all the newer sensors. These did not exist in 1983. Not to mention trying to get an adapter to mate the transmission and remainder of drive train. The days of cross-year engine swapping have been made very difficult because of PCM program controls, but that same technology makes the engines themselves run better and last longer.

How do i tell if my overdrive is working on my lucida.i think its in top then somtimes i feel another shift

Keep an eye on you tachometer. When you are pretty sure it has shifted to the top "direct" gear, note the RPMs .Try to maintain the same MPH and then note when you think has shifed again. If the RPMs drop again, you then know it has gone into OD. Hope this helps you understand.
Thanks, Robert

I got a 1987 chevy s10 pick up truck 2 wheel drive v6 2.8l my transmission is not passing 1st gear ?do you know if the kick cable or tv cable needs to be adjusted .

Just about all you can do is, with the engine off, from under the hood open the throttle all the way and check if the TV cable is tight. And check the fluid level, smell if its burnt or look if its brown.

Other causes could be,
Sticky governor
Sticking shift valve
Worn bands

Many years ago my mom's first 4 speed automatic was a 84 S10 2.8 2wd. She did not know it was a 4 speed and the indicator was broke so she counted the clicks to find drive. She was driving in the hills in over drive and all the downshifting was too much for it (should have driven in hills in 3rd gear). After that the transmission would not shift out of second gear.

if all other gears work fine then it's just a matter of changing out the solenoid that controls that gear you will save quite a bit of cash you don't have to change the whole transmission

Toyota pickup 1988 V6 Auto tranny does not shift into low 1

I guess the best , easiest & cheapest thing to do, right of the start is get fluid & filter changed, and lube all cables & linkages thoroughly, unless that's all been done recently.

IT IS NOT GOING INTO NEUTRAL. IT HAS LOST THE DIRECT DRIVE CLUTCH PACK INTERNALLY. SOUNDS LIKE IT IS HIGH MILEAGE. IF SO AND YOU CHANGE THE FLUID IT CLEANS UP ALL THE VARNISH IN THE TRANNY AND THE END RESULT IS TRANNY MALFUNCTIONS DEPENDING ON WHAT KIND OF CARE IT HAS HAD IN THE PAST.
