2003 chevy malibu radiator fan

I have a 2003 chevy malibu and my check engine light came on today. It appears to be the fans not coming on. they will come on when I turn on the ac and will turn off when I turn the ac off. I let the car run for a while and the temp got higher than it usually goes and the fans did not come on. Any suggestions

SOURCE: Radiator Electric Fan Motor on a 2003 Buick Century won't come on when temp gets high

I have a 1997 Buick Century with the same problem. Both my fans work if the A/C is
on as they should. If your turn off the A/C the passanger side fan will not come on
and at an idle the coolant in the radiator will boil, you can hear it in the overflow tank.
If you are driving there is enough air flow thru the radiator that the coolant doesn't
boil and the car doesn't overheat. I have replace the water pump, the thermostat.
and the ETS or engine temperature sensor mounted just above the thermostat in
the thernostat housing, to no avail, I still have the same problem. The only other
thing is the coolant level sensor in the radiator, which I haven't replace yet due
to the fact you have to pull the radiator in order to replace it, which is a major
undertaking. I have a low coolant indicator on all the time on the dash so I have
a pretty good idea the coolanat level sensor is bad. The coolant level is not low
so that sensor is not working as it should. I hope this may help with your problem.
To test you fan raise the hood when it is cold and top off the radiator and fill the
overflow tank to the cold mark. Start the car and let it idle with the A/C off and
see if the drivers side fans comes on. It will have to get to operating temp
before the fan will come on. If it doesn't come on replace the radiator low coolant
sensor on the passanger side of the radiator. If that doesn't fix the problem
replace the thermostat and the Engine Temperature Sensor at the thermostat
housing with an A/C Delco Engine Temperature Sensor. Good Luck..

We have a 2002 Chevy Malibu.. And the fans want run to keep the motor cool.. When the motor get too hot the car will shut off.. So, what do I do about it??

First check fuses, there are two fans if fitted with air con. The air con. fan only comes on with the air con. The engine radiator cooling fan comes on at operation tem., it is controlled by a censer switch on the radiator .If there is power to the switch and the switch is OK the fan motor is at fault.

sounds like the fan isn't running right or there is blockage at the radiator you should also just take a look and raise coolant level if needed

My car (2003 Malibu) is overheating. The thermostat, water pump, and radiator cap has been replaced, yet it continues to overheat. What would you recommend be done next?

Check for blown head gaskets. GM aluminum-head engines are VERY UNFORGIVING when it comes to being overheated. The heads usually warp, resulting in blown head gaskets and repeated overheating like you are describing. One of the main symptoms will be that you fill the cooling system and open the bleader screws to get the air out of the system. Then you start the engine and run it until the cooling fan comes on. When the fan comes on, place your hand behind the cooling fan and see if the air coming through the radiator is HOT. If it is blowing cool air, the coolant is not flowing through the radiator like it should. This is usually caused by high pressure in the cooling system due to combustion gasses getting in.

I have a 1999 Chevy Malibu. The radiator fan only comes on when the air conditioner is on. If you think it is the relay, how can I test the relay with a multi meter

The radiator fan only comes on when the car is under a load or after its been idling for a while. When you turn the AC on it puts a load on the motor so the radiator fan kicks on to prevent overheating.

THE CAR KEEP OVER HEATING

Blow out the radiator core from the engine side with compressed air to remove bugs and other debris. Make sure the cooling fan comes on when the engine gets to operating temp. If the car car has AC, turn it on which should start the fan immediately. If no fan action, try to turn the fan blade(s) which should turn easily with no noises. Check the fan fuse and fan relay. If the fan(s) come on fine, check the coolant level in the radiator core--it should be right at the top. Check the seal on the cap and replace it if it is decayed or damaged. Make sure the reservoir bottle is filled to the line and the connecting hose is in good shape. It is possible that the thermostat is sticking and not opening fully. Also, check the intake and outlet hoses to and from the radiator for firm condition without decay, collapse, or other damage. A hose can sometimes peel away a portion of the hose interior which can cause blocking. Hope some of this helps!

1999 chevy malibu overheating have a leak but can't find where it is coming from, and fans don't come on to cool down engine..help

If you are loosing coolant, you need to find out where. If nothing is coming out externally, then it has to be going inside. If you have a cracked cylinder head or blown head gasket, you can diagnose this by having a hydrocarbon test done at radiator. If you do, that can explain the fan problem as exhaust can drive coolant down below the sensor...no sensor reading...no fan.
You also need to check the fan relay and fan itself (fan quick check is to hot wire it to battery...if it runs, it's OK) Most manuals run through the test procedures you need...get one and do some testing.

Your fan motor might be fried... and check your coolant, they have a tool which measures its ability to do its job. you might need a radiator flush but start small... THe tool to make sure you anti-Freeze is good is very cheap. By one and test it (it tells you how to test it) then check your fuzes for your Radiator fans in your owners manual. if that is good take your fans off and have them tested. you need to get your fans working again even if you need to by new. And see if your car needs a coolant flush, ( a true flush not a drain and fill
