Most likely the catalytic converter fell apart or the muffler. Get it inspected. Or you can remove the 02 sensor. If it goes faster with it removed then you have a restriction in the exhause system

  • Anonymous Nov 17, 2009

There are a number of things that can cause this but without a scanner all we can do is guess. Removing the 02 sensor is the only thing you can do with no tools and for free, A technician would hook up a scanner and look for codes and for any data that isnt right. If it all looked good he would check fuel pressure for proper volume and pressure. If everything checked out ok then he might recommend a new computer. But I guarantee you the first thing he would suspect is a clogged exhaust system. He can test that by removing the 02 sensor and hooking up a pressure gauge to measure back pressure. But without any of this testing are you ready to throw on a $100 part from someone that has never seen the car and from someone that you cant get a refund on. If a shop throws on a part and it does not fix it they will at least remove it and not charge you. This site does come in handy at times but when it comes to getting the proper diagnoses to be guaranteed your not going to end up stranded in the middle of nowhere, then at those times your going to need hands on to fix it correctly.

HI. this is called limp mode. Your on- board Engine Computer is programmed to apply this adjustment to the power-train, when there is a serious issue detected within the engine compartment. this may be a failed sensor, or a serious issue that concerns the integrity of the CPU, itself. The best action here is to take this vehicle to the nearest dealership for a quick diagnostic scan on the CPU. This scan will pull all necessary codes that are stored on the ROM Chip. Once the codes are pulled, this will allow you, or your mechanic, to locate the actual issue that is causing this limp mode. The diagnostic read-out will , also, isolate the general area of concern, as well.

NOTE_If You are not near a dealer, you can have this scan administered at your local Auto-zone parts store free of charge.

If the engine runs well and there are sufficient RPM's then there is a problem with the transmission, torque converter or clutch depending on if it a manual or an automatic.

If you can be a little more specific I can provide more assistance, also list any codes that may be stored in the computer.

The 1st thing to do is replace the fuel filter, here is how you do that
Instructions Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1 Place one wheel chock in front of each of the Sunfire's front tires. Lift the rear of the Sunfire with a floor jack. Then support the weight of the vehicle with one jack stand placed under each rear axle.
  2. Step 2 Locate the fuel filter. The fuel filter is a metal cylindrical piece located underneath the Sunfire on the passenger's side of the fuel tank.
  3. Step 3 Note that one end of the fuel filter has a nut, while the other end has a clip. Use a wrench to remove the portion of the fuel line which enters the side of the fuel filter which has the nut.
  4. Step 4 Allow any fuel which is present in the line to drain into a bucket. Use a tool for quick connect fittings to release the clip on the opposite side of the fuel filter. The quick connect fitting tool is readily available at most auto parts stores, and can sometimes be rented instead of purchased. Once the fitting is released, pull the fuel line away from the filter.
  5. Step 5 Press the end of the new fuel filter that has the clip onto the fuel line until the line clicks into place. Then use a wrench to tighten the end of the other fuel line to the fuel filter.
  6. Step 6 Raise the back of the Sunfire with the floor jack.Remove the jack stands from underneath the axles. Then lower the Sunfire with the floor jack and remove the wheel chocks to complete the installation
If this doesn't cure the problem have the electronic engine control system tested for fault codes.

SUIT YOURSELF HERE BUT THE FUEL FILTER IS VERY LIKELY THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM, IF THE FILTER HAS BEEN REPLACED THE NEXT THING TO DO IS HAVE THE MAF SENSOR TESTED FOR PROPER FUNCTION AND RUN A ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL FAULT CODE TEST, I HAVE OVER 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE DOING THESE KINDS OF PROBLEMS AND DO KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT HERE, TRUST ME AND TRY THE SOLUTIONS

Pontiac Sunfire 1997. Won't start.

When jumped off ,if it drags to start, have the starter checked, and if when jumping the car off,the starter turns the engine over real good, then the cables are most likely the problem, replace them.
