YES, you CAN set the timing on these cars. (i own two of them and have changed timing on both) you take off everything to get the timing, (its located BEHIND the front plate of motor) you will also want to change the water pump since you already there. the water pump runs off the timing belt on these cars. bad design, but thats what it is and youy can either do it now while youve got the front of the motor broke down and save yourself alot of time and effort later or wait. id recomend do it now. anyhow, once you have the front plate off and are looking at the timing belt you will see if wraps around three pullys. the top two pully are you cam shaft pullys. the bottom is your crank shaft. on all the pullys there are marks each pully has its own mark that needs to be alligned with the alligning mark for THAT pully. you can acmplish this by simply turning the pully as many rotations as needing to allign it (THEM). AND THATS IT. ONCE ALLIGNED PUT BACK TOGETHER AND CRANK IT UP.

There is no way to set the timing on this vehicle. Everything is computer controlled. The timing is controlled by readings from a combination sensors on the engine. The main sensor responsible for the timing is the CAM Position Sensor. This isn't the only sensor, just the main one. It is found on the top front of the engine, right near the coolant thermostat housing.

Definitely not a do-it-yourself project. It involves discharging the air conditioning system and pulling the steering column and dashboard.
