Question about 1994 Pontiac Grand Am

Brake line is leaking in the left rear of my 94 grand am. cant seem to follow line up to abs system. dont want to cut the wrong line. how do i know what line to replace going into abs.

Your lines are in a 5 groove holder plastic clip on the drivers side by the back door,if you could have use of a lift it is visible to follow it from the left wheel cylinder around the gas tank.

Sounds like a leak in the brake line.
In the first place the front disc brakes do 70% of the work to stop the vehicle .
When you need to bleed your brakes you break into the system this lets fluid out air will get in every time so even a pin hole in the line or at a fitting will let air in slowly .The problem is air is compressible fluid is not so look for leaks at rear lines and fittings its vary common for rear lines to rust out and many inexpensive ways to repair them .
An other thing to know is when bleeding brakes is if you didn't open the front lines you don't need to bleed them but with the rears start with the farthest one away from the master cylinder passenger side rear 99% of the time and work back to the master .
I think your whole problem is a rusted out line 94 thats a lot of road salt good luck

This vehicle is equipped with the BOSCH 5.3 antilock braking system.
The vehicle is equipped with the following braking systems:
• Antilock Brake System (ABS)
• Dynamic Rear Proportioning (DRP)
• Traction Control System (ETS) (w/NW7)
• Traction Control System (TCS) (w/NW9)
• Vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) You need to have vehicle checked for DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes , do you know what they are ? The traction control , ABS an stability control are all a function of the electronic brake control system .It also seams the power steering is controlled by the Antilock brake system.The Magnasteer® is controlled through the ABS module and varies the torque by adjusting the current flow through the actuator.
Your best place to start would be to have ABS module scanned for DTC'S . Codes would point you in right diagnostic direction .
The following components are involved in the operation of the above systems:
• Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), The EBCM controls the system functions and detects failures.
The EBCM contains the following components:
- System Relay, The system relay is energized when the ignition is ON and no ABS DTCs are present. It supplies battery positive voltage to the solenoid valves and pump motor.
- Vent Tube, The vent tube, located in the EBCM, is an opening to the internal cavity of the EBCM. It allows ventilation of the EBCM internals.
• Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV), The BPMV contains the hydraulic valves and pump motor that are controlled electrically by the EBCM. The BPMV uses a 4 circuit configuration with a diagonal split. The BPMV directs fluid from the reservoir of the master cylinder to the left front and right rear wheels and fluid from the other reservoir to the right front and left rear wheels. The diagonal circuits are hydraulically isolated so that a leak or malfunction in one circuit will allow continued braking ability on the other.

Need to know how to remove all the brake lines on a 1998 grand am


Just duplicate what is there

Have to buy tubing at auto parts store,
cut,flair & bend to match old ones best you can

I assume you are referring to a line going to
proportioning valve.

If they don't unfasten, just cut then out & remove all
juntion blocks etc,so you can remove the fittings with
them in your vise.

Avoid the ABS System.asumming none of those lines
are rusted

did you bench bleed the master cylinder before putting it on car ! if not, you have air trapped in the lines and it needs bled out. if there is no leaks in system. have a good day !

Replaced front calipers,master cylinder,front and rear pads and resurfaced all four rotors.I bled the brakes starting with right rear then left rear, right front then left front and still feels like there...


did you bench bled master? if yes do you have abs system,if so you must bleed at abs block,if it has bleeders, if not then you must line bleed all 6 lines.2in from master 4 out to wheeles. then rebleed wheel in cylinder.If you have bleeders at abs block you dont to rebleed wheels. best dun with powerbleeder. hoooooops this helps

Bleed the master cylinder at the brake lines,then bleed right rear ,left rear,right front,and left front.

Finding the correct line may be irrelevent! I work as prof. & am pretty sure that most of the other brake lines are in just as bad as shape as the one you're attempting to repair. My best suggestion is ro repair all the brake lines (At least the rear ones).

Abs brake warning light comes on and rear brakes remain stuck on


I had the same problem when climbing a long, steep grade.  My mechanic told me that there is ABS sensor located on the top of the differential gear box which can get plugged with metal shavings, thereby causing this condition.  It can easily be replaced by loosening the retainer, pulling out the unit, and replacing it with the new one.
Seemed to correct the problem... however, I suggest that you also drain the gear oil & replace it, so that you don't clog your new sensor in short order with the same metal shavings that created the problem in the first place.
