You dont "tighten" a belt. where your serpentine belt runs there is a tension pulley. its a very tight spring under the pulley arm. make sure the belt is around this pulley. also google the belt diagram for your make and model to make sure you have the belt ran right. good luck

How do i replace fanbelt


i don't know what car it is but this is what I know
  • The belt is held tightly in place by a number of pulleys. If you loosen just one, it will come off easily. (there are other variations with spring loaded tensioners but this advice concentrates on the basic system).
  • The alternator is usually rigged up so it can be swung sideways to loosen the belt.
  • All you have to do is find the right size spanner or socket wrench, loosen the mounting bolts on alternator then back off the single top bolt just enough to let the alternator move around.
  • Now you can slip the old belt off, check it for size against the new one and slip the new one on.
  • The new belt has to be reasonably tight. Not so tight that it will snap, of course, but tight enough to drive the alternator and water pump. You can just heave on the alternator but you'd probably have trouble holding it tight. Instead, slide a hammer handle or similar lever between the alternator and the mounting, taking care not to damage the alternator housing. Now all you need is a very light pressure to hold it tight while you do up the bolts. When the adjustment is complete, there should be approximately 10 mm to 13 mm of play in the belt, any more and the belt needs tightening.
The new belt will settle-in and stretch a little, so the tension should be checked again after 200 kilometres.

After i installed a timing belt and water pump car is making a squeek noise. Could it be the timing belt is to tight or not installed correct?


verry possible the belt is to tight see if you can wiggle the belt at all if there is a little play then you need to check you pulleys on the motor if there is no play what so ever in the belt then its to tight

Noisy fan belt


with a noisy belt its caused by a worn belt,belt not tight enough,a pulley in poor condition or grease/oil on the belt.check the condition of the belt,make sure the belt is tight enough.if it has an auto belt tensioner it may not be any good and need replacing.if the noisy belt doesn`t use an auto tensioner then the belt will need tightening.if its grease/oil then the belt will need to be replaced and the pulley`s cleaned off.

Belt broke stering has gone tight-which belt do i need audi a4 1996


Give the model and year at an autoparts store and ask for a power steering belt. Will likely be running the waterpump and alternator too so you cant drive far because you will overheat the engine and or flatten your battery.
Loosen alternator bracket all bolts and move it to the shortest distance to the nearest pulley wheel. Slide belt around all free wheels and idlers (tensioning wheels) and move alternator bracket back to original position so belt is tight.
If you cant get the belt on belt is too short, if it is not tight with alternator about half way along the adjustment bracket belt is too long. Take it back to store, act real grumpy, try to leave with right size belt and a free gift.

85 chevy celebrity. replaced alternator. that one squealed 2. got another. still hear a squeel. does not squeel when belt is off.


ALTERNATOR BELT NEED ADJUSTING AND REPLACING IT GLAZED. WHEN DRIVE BELT GET GLAZED SHINY CAUSE IT TO SLIP AND SQUEAL.REPLACE ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT. AND ADJUST IT DRIVE BELT TENSION BY TIGHTEN THE UNTIL YOU CAN PRESS DOWN ON THE BELT IN THE LONGEST RUN. YOU NEED TO PRESS DOWN BELT AND GET A 1/4 TO 1/2 INCH DEFLECTION IN BELT.THE BELT CANT BE TOO TIGHT WHERE WHEN YOU PRESS DOWN AT IT WONT GIVE IN NONE TOO TIGHT, WILL CAUSE PREMATURE ALTERNATOR BEARING FAILURE IF DRIVE BELT TOO TIGHT.

Tried to tighten belt but became loose! Need Help!


There should be a tensioner pulley on your vehicle that makes the belt tight. If the belt is not tight then either your tensioner is bad or your belt is worn to thin. There should be a mark on the tensioner that shows how far the belt can wear before you need to replace. If it is not below the mark yet then your tensioner needs to be replaced.

How do you replace the alternator?


there are 2 locking bolts underneath and 2 bolts on the front belt adjuster bracket,undo the 2 bottom bolts and the bolt in the alt/bracket,loosen the block bolt/adjuster bracket,that will release the belt tension,then pull out of the engine bay,replacement is the 2 bottom bolts finger tight then the belt over the pulley then finger tight for the bracket,tension the belt be levering the alt away from the block and tighten up the alt/bracket first then the other 3.check belt tightness (1/2"movement/slack on longest run)then recheck all bolts tight.....you will need to recode your radio after.and dont forget to note what wires came off what terminals.......draw a picture if needed...

How to put the alternater belt back on?


slacken the alternator bolts then slip the belt on the pulleys,using a long screwdiver behind the alternator,lever it out to tighten belt so that the longest part of the belt between pulleys has 1/2 inch movement(too tight and your alternator will need new bearings very soon...)then do up the bolts,check belt tension after all bolts tight to confirm not to tight/loose.

Timing belt on 1996 mazda protege slips during startup


Hello, this to me sounds like your fan belt slipping (not timing belt). To adjust the fan belt you need to undo your bolt on the alternator, pull it tight onto the fan belt and while holding it tight do the bolt back up tightly. this will stop yoour fan belt from slipping. I hope this helps.

The fan/serpentine belt is usually held tight with either spring loaded tension or the pressure put on it by the alternator. If it's the the spring loaded tensioner it has to be pressing against the outside of the belt to keep it tight as it passes around the pulleys.
If it's the alternator that keeps the belt tight, you'll need to find the bolt holding the alternator, usually the top side of the unit. You will notice a curved opening where the bolt passes through, loosen the bolt and keeping the belt tight pull the alternator out away from the engine to put pressure on the belt. Tighten the bolt and check the belt's tension by pressing on it with your finger it should only move slightly, usually less than half an inch. It is important to check the tension after it runs for some time to make certain the belt hasn't slipped or stretched, some stretching is normal as it heats up. If the belt is too tight it can damage the alternator or other parts. A repair manual is also available at the auto parts store to assist you in the procedure average cost 20 to 50 dollars depending on the brand Haynes or Chilton. Hope this helps, good luck
