10amp "Room Lamp" fuse instantly blows!?!

I have a wiring and fuse issue with my 1996 Eclipse. Most of the things inside of the car have quit working. Including my radio, interior lights, turn signals, blower motor, hazard lights and more. My temp gauge instantly jumps to high when I turn the key on and my windshield wipers won't turn off. I knew the car had a charging problem, and I found the 120amp fuse under the hood blown. I replaced it and it instantly blew when I connected the battery. I unhooked the cables from the alternator and it didn't blow the next time I connected the battery, so there is a short inside of the alternator. Now I've found the 10amp "room lamp" fuse under the hood is blowing every time I connect the battery. I am in serious need of help with this issue. Thank you very much for any advice. I just don't know how several different things would instantly short out. I bought the car, and before hauling it home (bad clutch/flywheel) the previous owners jumped the car off and all of the interior things worked and the motor ran (although it idled at 3000 RPM which I assume is either due to the charging problem and the battery not having enough charge to control the computer). I hauled it 45 minutes to my house, unloaded it from trailer, and nothing worked inside except for a couple of lights on the dash, headlights and tail lights. Jumping it may have shorted the alternator out maybe, but why all of these other problems. Please HELP!!!!

SOURCE: tow/haul does not work on 2000 chevy truck. whereis fuse?

I had a problem with my tow/haul button not working. I came to find out that the gear shift had cut the wire running to the button in two. You may want to check that.

on all well most all they have wires at the end of shifter after awhile they break over a period of time have to take colum cover off u can splice wire back together best to soilder them together

climb under the truck! on the drivers side of the trans in the neutral safty swith unplug it and look for rotted connectors! if so repair damage! second go to passengerside near the rear of the trans ull see a plate that s being held by 2 7 or 8 mm bolts remove plate ! behind the plate there will b another plug do the same! inspect for corrosion

SOURCE: 2003 eclipse and gauge fuse keeps blowing

you may have a broken wire in between the doors. there is a rubber boot the harness runs through u will have to take it off to inspect. hope this helps.

There are a few more thing's involved then just fuse's .

Central junction fuse box , behind left side or right side of the dash panel ! Fuse's are - F2.5 - 5amp , F2.11 - 10amp , F2.24 - 15amp , F2.16 10amp .Do you have steering wheel controls ? These controls go through the clock spring inside the steering column ! They break also , but you mite have some other signs ,like air bag light lit on the dash . sure that feed is SHORTED.
the fuse, saves the FIRE , if there was no fuse at all. boom.

same with home, cars, trains or air craft. all the same. this.

using a higher fuse is dumb. sorry, but why risk fire.? or
very very expensive harness damage , why?.

1999 jeep. Wrangler #3 fuse (10amp) for instrument panel just started blowing. I put new fuse in and turn key and it blows. Just bought jeep last Monday.


that fuse blowing saved the ensuing fire. that is its job, no fires.
that means, it has a dead short on that line,.

if you dont have an ammeter, and fuse circuit breaker adapter tool.
both cheap) you will play H3LL finding it.

so wana buy tools or guess. you can inspect that line for free.
looking for days. ????
the first thing to do is look at the schematic,
for fuse 3 (fuse 3 inside or outside fuse box.) there are 2 fuse 3s/

one fuse 3 is 30amps. runs the ignition switch (vast paths)
fuse 3 PDC. must not be that one.
the interiour box, is called FB, or junction box.
it has a #3 too. called FB

see all them loads.... all can short. or the wires.
its and ORANGE wire (USA colors)
PRNDL LAMP
FOG LAMPS
RADIO
REAR DEFOG.
A/C HEAT.
REAR WASHER.
AND BINGO. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER.
ONE OF THOSE is shorted, or the path to it.
we use and ampclamp meter $45 to find this.
it tell which line is shorted and in which direction.
makes finding it easy,

this allows me to find the short, and not need a box of 100 fuses.

if fuse size is ATC, get thermal breaker.
it auto resets. so you can just keep measuring current and see
it trip, over and over, and watch the meter.
while tracing the plath

I would suggest getting a muleteer with a 10amp current option. Pull all the fuses and relays. Disconnect the negative battery cable and place the multimeter inbetween the negative battery post and the negative cable. You may get a small amp draw for the computer. Start replacing the fuses and monitor the amp draw. If you have an excessive draw when you first connect, it probably is an alternator issue.

could be the fuse or the actual heater blower system an the only way to acces the system is by removing your dash i would start by replacing the fuse then going from their

Does it blow the new fuses immediately? If so, the lighter socket is the more probable short circuit location--remove the center wire from the back of the socket and recheck. If no help, remove the power wire at the radio and recheck again. If neither helps, then there is the possibility of a wire short in the wiring harness or under the fuse panel. If the fuses didn't blow, then look for a burned/loose connection under the fuse panel. Did you smell anything burning or getting hot while trying the fuses? There would be no reason to include a circuit breaker in series with a fuse for protection. Good luck!

1996 ford f150 blows the 10amp fuse going to the speed odometer.


I'm glad you found what was causing the fuse to blow. A wiring diagram is almost a must when troubleshooting electrical. you may be able to find that sensor at a pick-a-part or wrecking yard. Just be extreamly careful, it is very easy to set off the air bag. Make sure that all power is off before working around that area.
