Can I use yellowish green coolant in my 2006 Impala?

In the old days green antifreeze was aluminium safe but more expensive than the blue. Both types were year-round coolants and supposed to be changed every three years.
At that time methanol based antifreeze was also available and was dirt-cheap but was winter protection only and needed to be drained as soon as the chance of frost had gone.

Later there came universal antifreeze which might have been blue or green or even red or pink but was infinitely mixable, said to be aluminium safe and also with a claimed life of three years.
Fashionable around this time and still available was a number of premixed ready to use coolants. ForLife was one popular brand and this was orange coloured. Changes in the ph value caused the coolant to change colour.

Later came the polypropylene-glycol antifreezes and coolants which were pink or red and claimed to have a life of five years. Initially this type would not mix with the ethylene-glycol types but it was soon reformulated and now all types can be safely mixed.

I avoid changing coolant at 3 years, 5 years or any particular interval. I wish to do my part for the survival of planet Earth and so I bought a pack of Johnson's coolant test papers (a ph test kit would perform the same function). I draw out a sample of coolant into a sight glass to check for clarity, test with the hydrometer and test-paper and top up if needed. I have been doing this for nearly 30 years and rarely do I need to change coolant.

Hard water produces limescale on the surfaces it comes into contact with. Once it has been heated to about 180 degrees F it is inert. Frequently changing coolant can cause cooling and flow problems unless soft water is used or preferably boiled water.

I have a 2004 ford explorer xlt. the indicator says engine fail safe mode. what could be the problem?

Failure Mode Effects Management (FMEM) is an alternate system strategy in the PCM designed to maintain engine operation if one or more sensor inputs fail.
When a sensor input is perceived to be out-of-limits by the PCM, an alternative strategy is initiated. The PCM substitutes a fixed value and continues to monitor the incorrect sensor input. If the suspect sensor operates within limits, the PCM returns to the normal engine operational strategy.
All FMEM sensors display a sequence error message on the scan tool. The message may or may not be followed by Key On Engine Off or Continuous Memory DTCs when attempting Key On Engine Running Self-Test Mode.
With the fail safe mode was the "Service" wrench light lit or check engine light ?

Take your papper work in and tell them you want it fixed and you dont feel you should have to pay for there misdiagnosis the first time. You need to talk to the service manager. If he insists on you pay tell him you want to talk to his boss.keep going up the ladder all the way to the auto manufacturer.

Can i keep a paper clip in my low pressure switch to keep it working?

No, this would not be safe. If it's cycle, and 'tricking' the low pressure switch allows it to work, then it sounds like you need freon added to the system.

Car wont start; jumped successfully once; wont start again; battery fine

1. Start solenoid stuck: remove minus battery cable. Remove starter. Remove solenoid and clean and lightly grease the slide.
2. Go to most Auto Parts Stores for a free test.
3. If the battery connections and Block Ground connections are not clean, make them clean.
4. Only clean the positive connection at the starter After removing the battery minus connection.
5. Use 150 grit sand paper to clean the small solenoid lead. If you must remove the small bolt be very sensitive of your applied pressure, these small bolts break and strip easily.
SAFETY: The last connection made is always the negative/minus battery connection for all starter related repairs. These wires will burn you if the battery is not safely disconnected and best when wrapped by a rag or paper towel.
Good Luck.
