Try this - as a last resort for ONE TIME only - - if the wheel is turned to the right or left in a hard way or difficult to turn TOWARD the way the front wheels are turned then - have a strong person turn the wheel the SAME WAY as the front tires are pointing - turn it HARD like ur life depended on it and have someone else try to turn the key - if it is just a STRESS thing it will only happen if you take the key out with a too large amount of stress on the steering wheel locking mechanism.
If the above doesn't work - put the key in the ignition - -have someone put a little pressure on the steering wheel the same way the tires are turning - -- if you can - - if not - continue -- get a MEDIUM sized hammer and give it a good wack - - more than you think - yet less than a full blow - give it a wack - - try it - wack it again -

wack it real hard if all else fails - - If this works and you can start the vehicle - chances are slim it will ever do it again - -- - take it to the shop for a new ignition switch before u shut it off - call them even - and they will know what to tell you about where to part etc - -

This probably isn't the solution, but are the wheels turned at an angle? Some times if the wheels are cut at an extreme angle when the key is turned off, their is rotational pressure on the stering wheel. That pressure may have the steering wheel lock in a bind. Try to turn the steering wheel to relieve this pressure as you are turning the key. Good luck.

Is the transmission for REAL locked in "Park"? You may need to pull apart the steering column to verify the interlock linkage between the shifter lever and the key cylinder.

call a reputable locksmith, they will be able to send someone to you that can make a key from scratch. usually cost about a hundred dollar, but better than breaking the lock on the steering column.

FIRST OF ALL, TURN OFF RADIO,DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. IF EQUIPPED WITH TILT STEERING COLUMN,REMOVE TILT LEVER.CAREFULLY REMOVE THE UPPER AND LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVERS. REMOVE THE 3 TAMPER PROOF TORX IGNITION SWITCH MOUNTING SCREWS USING SNAP ON TOOL TTXR15A2 OR EQUIVALENT. GENTLY PULL THE SWITCH AWAY FROM THE COLUMN AND REMOVE THE 2 ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH. WITH THE KEY IN THE LOCK POSITION, DEPRESS THE KEY CYLINDER RETAINING PIN FLUSH WITH THE KEY CYLINDER SURFACE. ROTATE THE KEY CLOCKWISE TO THE OFF POSITION THE KEY CYLINDER SHOULD NOW BE UNSEATED. ROTATE THE KEY CYLINDER COUNTER CLOCKWISE BACK TO THE LOCK POSITION, AND REMOVE THE LOCK CYLINDER. ( TO INSTALL ) CONNECT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS TO THE IGNITION SWITCH. BE SURE THE SWITCH PARK LOCK DOWEL PIN ENTERS THE SLOT IN THE PARK LOCK SLIDER LINKAGE INSTALL THE RETAINING SCREW AND BRACKET. TORQUE THE SCREW TO 26 INCH LBS. INSTALL THE STEERING COLUMN COVERS AND THE TILT LEVER IF REMOVED. WITH THE KEY CYLINDER AND THE IGNITION IN THE LOCK POSITION INSTALL THE KEY CYLINDER INTO THE SWITCH UNTIL IT BOTTOMS. How do i remove the steering column cover to get at the ignition tumbler on a 1993 dodge dakota

CAUTION Disconnect and isolate the negative (ground) battery cable. This will disable the air bag system. Failure to disconnect the battery could result in accidental deployment and possible personal injury. Allow the system capacitor to discharge for two minutes then begin air bag system component removal. To install:
  1. Engage the electrical connectors to the ignition switch and make sure the switch locking tabs are fully seated.
  2. Before attaching the ignition switch to a tilt steering column, the transmission shifter must be in the PARK position. Also the park lock dowel pin and the column lock flag must be properly indexed before installing the switch as follows:
    1. Place the transmission shifter in the PARK position
    2. Place the ignition switch in the LOCK position. The switch is in the lock position when the column lock flag is parallel to the ignition switch terminals.
    3. Position the ignition switch park lock dowel pin so it will engage the steering column park lock slider linkage.
    4. Apply a light coating of grease to the column lock flag and the park lock dowel pin.
  3. Place the ignition switch against the lock housing opening on the steering column. Ensure that the ignition switch park lock dowel pin enters the slot in the park lock slider linkage in the steering column.
  4. Install the retaining bracket and ignition switch mounting screws, then tighten the screws to 22-30 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with a tilt steering column, install the tilt lever.
  6. With the key cylinder and the ignition switch in the LOCK position, insert the key cylinder into the ignition switch until it bottoms.
  7. Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder. While pushing the key cylinder in toward the ignition switch, rotate the ignition key until the end of travel.
  8. Install the retaining screw into the bracket and lock cylinder. Tighten the screw to 22-30 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  9. Install the steering column covers, then the tilt lever, if equipped.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Check for proper operation.

1993 Aerostar Ignition Lock Replace W/Tilt Wheel

replacing an ignition switch requires a special tool, that can be pretty costly, you may have to call a lock smith to come change it or make a key.I just went to pull a parts and for $30.00 i replaced the whole steering column, and got lucky cuz the column i bought took the same key i have.
it was easy to put in.

98 escort key stuck in ignition

http://i48.tinypic.com/2qatvz8.jpg

a EAST fix, I removed the plastic around the steering wheel (3 bolts under the steering wheel) and I manually pulled the lever toward you to remove the key. THEN I used a zip tie to hold it back so my key can come out from now on... saved you $300 for a new tumbler

EASY fix and cost $.05cents.

This was done on my 2001 ford escort and it should work with other fords, like the focus model.

this is a common problem because the ignition switc gets ;oose and in the process could have grounded under the steering column so just repair the wires to the starter motor and instal the new ign switch and you may end up replacing the starter motor also

Ignition cylinder removal

If your vehicle is equipped with air bags and you don't know how to disable them, you should not attempt to do this repair yourself. You need to remove the steering wheel, (a puller is required for this), and remove the multifunction switch. Lower the steering column by removing the upper mount bolts, and this will enable you to remove the cylinder. The switch is a separate part beneath the cylinder.
