What causes engine hard to start after warm up

Bad fuel pump, fuel not shutting off when turned off and leaking into the engine.

Does it smell of gas under the hood after it sets?

If you have an electronic fuel pump then
turn on the key a few times when its warmed up without starting it to exercise the fuel pump. See if that makes any difference with starts. If so then replace fuel pump.

A relative of mine has a '97 GMC 1500. 2 years ago I spent several weeks chasing gremlins on it. Replaced everything - plugs, wires, ICM, TPS, and some other items. How many miles on your truck? It should fire within 1 to 3 turns of starter engagement. I have to ask, how do you know there is no spark or fuel when the engine does not start? Have you checked fuel pressure? Our trouble ended up being the fuel pump. We pulled the bed off the truck and found that the lines and wires at the top of the tank were severely rusting and eroding. I would have never guessed this kind of degradation due to the fact that the truck is so well taken care of. Check your fuel pump and tank thoroughly. Also check the tank filler neck and vent. If it runs for 15 minutes then quits, sounds like the fuel pump might be cutting out. Will not hurt to check and may save you time under the hood. I have poured over those electrical diagrams for the GMC. Alot of things tied into keeping those engines going nowadays. Let me know how things work out. GC.

bad fuel pump relay. when you first turn the key to the run position , not cranking the engine, if you listen close you should be able to here the fuel pump run for a few seconds. if you can't here it you need to replace the fuel pump relay in the under hood fuse box.

It sounds like no fuel is getting to your engine. Blown, open or missing fuses are an easy fix and is a good place to start. Since the engine runs with starting fluid, the spark is good. More than likely it is a low or no fuel pressure issue. There may be due to a clogged fuel filter or worse, a defective fuel pump. Electronically Fuel Injected (EFI) engines have the pump located in the fuel tank. The fuel tank will need to be removed to access the pump.

You can listen for the pump running if you insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the run position - not all the way to start. When in this position, the pump is energized to pressurize the fuel lines to the fuel injectors so that fuel is available to them when cranking the engine over to start. You should be able to hear the pump running for several seconds at that time. If you can't, have someone else turn the key while you get you ear close to the tank.

Unstabilized gasoline left in a tank for a long period of time can break down and coat everything in varnish - which is probably what has happened to your pump. Sometimes, you may be able to sharply rap the tank while the engine is being cranked to "coax" the pump to operate.

Those are a couple of things to check before having it towed to your garage. Good luck!

Fuel pump stays on after engine is turned off The pump continues to run for several hours discharging the battery

Unplug the fuse going to the fuel pump. If this stop the fuel pump from running. If it does, then go to the fuel pump relay after plugging the fuse back in and unplug it and see if the pump stops running. If it does the relay is stuck in close position and will need replaced. You can uplug the fuse and replug the fuse to the fuel pump until you get it solved. It usually is a yellow 25 amp fuse that is under the dash.

Fuel Delvery

you really need to test fuel pressure/did you replace filter under car/you should also replace fuel regulator on top frt of eng./but most likely the fuel pump has moved on the mounting bracket and allowing fuel to leak back into the tank (low pressure)

Wont start has spark and fule

check the fuse box under the hood and make sure the fuel pump fuse is not blown.
if the fuse is blown, replace it and see if you have any fuel/spark. the fuel pump fuse controls almost everything electrical under the hood. if the fuse keeps blowing, then there is a short sumwhere in the engine wiring harness.
