Make sure your fully stopped and in nuetral when engaging the 4x4, then put it in 4 lo or 4 hi. if it still pops out there is a problem with the actuator .

I own a 2002 Dodge Dakota 4x4 truck. As I am stepping on the gas pedal, the truck starts to slow down and makes a rough sound as though something is not receiving gas. The best way to describe the sound...

I would try 3 things
1. when was the fuel filter replaced last? I would replace it if you don't know when and you may have ran into some bad gas. Replace it.
2. Same with the air filter.
3. Add fuel injector cleaner.
Hope this helps.

Carb is sticking.

car and start it up and try to push the gas pedal and it doesn't move. Perhaps it comes free with a bit of coaxing, or force, but, over time, this problem is certain to get worse.Or, far more frightening, you're on the freeway and push the pedal to pass a slow moving truck. When you take your foot off the pedal it doesn't come back up and your car goes speeding down the highway.
Having a sticking gas pedal can be a very dangerous situation and you shouldn't drive your car if you're experiencing these kinds of problems. However, it may be an easy fix once you figure out why it is sticking. The gas pedal to throttle connection is actually quite simple. The pedal acts as a lever that moves the throttle able in and out. The throttle cable pushes a small lever that opens and closes the throttle. Any problems with the gas pedal is certain to be in one of these three parts.
The first step to diagnose the cause of a sticking gas pedal is to remove the breather so you can get to the carburetor or the throttle body on a fuel injected vehicle. Once the breather is removed you will be able to access the cable linkages. Disconnect the cable from the throttle. You can now move the throttle manually to see if the problem is there or if it is in the cable or the pedal.
If the throttle moves freely the issue is most likely somewhere else. If the throttle is the location of the problem you will want to clean that. Depending on whether you have a carbureted or a fuel injected vehicle you will want to make sure you get the appropriate spray cleaner from your parts dealer. Fuel injector cleaner won't get all of the stuff that might be causing problems on a carburetor but carburetor cleaner will leave residues that can damage a fuel

The vehicle turns over. When you step on the gas pedal no gas is going into the carburater. There is gas in the vehicle. Bad fuel filter or bad fuel pump?

You have fuel injection on there. Fuel delivery and pressure are checked at the fuel rail. You should hear the pump in the tank come on when you turn the key on. If not check the fuse, pump and asd relay and the pump itself. Another common cause is a bad crank position sensor. If failed, the pump will not come on.
Test procedures can be found in haynes and chilton manuals.
Always test first before buying parts.

94 gmc 4x4 1500 overdrive sometimes works

Check for a transmission speed sensor fault (OBDII scan). Loss of speed sensor signal will result in no torque converter lock up, and no overdrive. Also transmission filter should have been changed at 80,000 miles. Age of your vehicle(1994) warrants the filter service. Transfer case (4WD) needs to be serviced as well.

I have never driver a 4 wheel drive. I am going from portland oregon to phoenix az. not sure how or when to switch to four wheel. does the truck need to be in park? etc.

Do you have manual locking hubs on the front? If you do, you have to turn them to 'lock' position. If you have automatic hubs, you skip that step. Never shift into 4x4 low range while moving. You must come to a complete stop to shift in or out of low range. Regular 4x4 (high range) can be engaged while you are moving. Let off the gas, and put it in 4x4 high range, do the same to go back to 2 wheel drive. Vehicles that are part time 4x4 (can be shifted in and out of 4x4) should never be driven in 4x4 while on a dry surface, as you can cause excessive wear or even failure of the system. So only use it in snow, off road, etc. Have a safe trip!

It sounds like the technician ether unplugged or damaged your idle air speed sensor. I would return the cherokee and file a complaint. Armed with the knowledge of the possible problem you may come out of this with the job done correctly. Hope this helps. Good luck cj2176.

Look at top of gas pedal arm area for a broken cable going through firewall area to throttle linkage. Need to replace, unless end just come off & you can re-attach.
