How do i deal with Error Code P0328

the following information courtesy of OBD-CODES.com P0328 Knock Sensor Circuit High Input OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High Input (Bank 1 or Single Sensor) What does that mean? Knock sensors are used to detect engine pre-detonation (engine knock or ping). The knock sensor (KS) is usually a two wire sensor. A 5 volt reference is supplied to the sensor and there is a signal return from the knock sensor to the PCM (powertrain control module). The sensor signal wire informs the PCM when a knock occurs and in what degree of severity. The PCM will retard the spark timing to avoid pre-detonation. Most PCMs have the ability to learn spark knock trends in the engine during normal operation. A P0328 code is a generic DTC, thus it applies to all makes of vehicles, and refers to a high output voltage of the knock sensor. In many cases, this means the voltage is above 4.5V but that specific value depends on the specific make and model of vehicle. This code refers to the sensor on bank #1. Symptoms Symptoms of a P0328 DTC may include: MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination Audible knocking from the engine compartment Pinging from engine under acceleration Loss of power Irregular RPM Causes Potential causes of a P0328 code include: Knock sensor connector is damaged Knock sensor circuit is open or shorted to ground Knock sensor circuit is shorted to voltage Knock sensor has failed Loose knock sensor Electrical interference in circuit Low fuel pressure Incorrect fuel octane Mechanical engine problem Failed/faulty PCM Possible Solutions If you can hear engine knock (detonation), first fix the source of the mechanical problem and retest. Ensure the correct octane fuel was used (some engines require premium fuel, check the owners manual). Aside from that, for this code, most likely the problem will lie either with the knock sensor itself or the wiring & connectors going from the sensor to the PCM. Realisitcally, for the DIY vehicle owner, the best next steps are to measure the resistance between the two knock sensor wire terminals where they go into the PCM. Also, check the voltage of the same terminals. Compare those numbers to the manufacturer's specifications. Also, check all wiring and connectors leading from the knock sensor back to the PCM. In addition, you should also check the resistance using a Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM) of the knock sensor itself, compare it to the vehicle manufacturers specification. If the knock sensor resistance value is out of spec, then it needs to be replaced. Other knock sensor DTCs include P0324, P0325, P0326, P0327, P0328, P0329, P0330, P0331, P0332, P0334 Register now to ask a question (free) Related P0328 DTC Discussions

You need to have it check out by a qualified repair shop because you don't want to guess on this one ! This has to do with the catalytic converter , if it's work or not ! The car needs to be hook up a up scale scan tool to check it out . Catalytic converters can cost as much as a Thousand dollars , so you want to be sure ! 2004 nissan xterra run great for 12 miles then misfiring,cnt get over 45 miles an hour. codes p 0733,p0420,p0430,p0328 comes up. new wires,new cap,rotor spark plugs 6 months old timming belt 6 months...

code p0733 refers to gear 3 -incorrect ration===causes---wiring---TR sensor/switch--shift solenoids---transmission mechanical fault
code p0420 refers to catalytic converter system -bank 1---efficiency below threshold===causes--cat converter--wiring--HO2s 2
code po430 refers to cat converter system bank 2--efficiency below threshold===causes--cat converter--wiring ---HO2s 2
code p0328 refers to knock sensor (KS) 1 bank 1--high input===causes--wiring short to positive--KS incorrectly tightened--KS---ECM

basically replace the cat converters as they are blocking the exhaust system and preventing your over 45mph problem
replace the TR sensor/ switch as you have not mentioned a transmission problem
Rectify the problem with the KS as it controls the air/fuel mixture setting which contributes to the car getting hot.

Trouble code p0420

The P0420 code means that the catalytic converter efficiency is below threshold. Since there are two oxygen sensors, above and after the catalytic converter, they together generate signals which are used to monitor the efficiency. However, if the catalytic converter is bad, the sensor after the converter will generate steady results, without any fluctuations.
You can replace the catalytic converter to overcome this problem. However, there are chances of the P0420 code to come up if there is any leak in the exhaust or the downstream o2 sensor (after the converter) is bad. Ideally, before spending on cat, you should try replacing the downstream sensor, which you can buy at low price from online stores like oxygensensorworld.com and also inspect for any small leaks in the exhaust system. Since the converter can cost you more, think of replacing it only if needed.

Wondering what the error code we were told means

First, the check engine light just means you are not meeting emissions right now. Not a big deal. Try disconnecting the battery for 1/2 hour and then reconnect and drive car for 10 miles. It may run rough while it relearns you engine controls again but it often clears the codes.

Now, codes are only 5 digits so I assume the 2 is extra.
P0420 = catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1)
P0240 = can't find this code.

Autozone also does free scans. please rate for me, thanks

Repair Codes - B2796, P0750 and P0420.

B2796 is no communication in Immobiliser system, which means you or some one else try to use a key transponder to start the car.
you need some one to clear that code. it doen't affect the car performance.
P0750 is shift Solenoid malfunction, you hsould have engine management light on the dash. this you can call the dealer, I believe this is cover by Toyota service bulletin.
http://www.mediafire.com/?jjmootmytfz
P0420 is O2 oxygen sensors.Toyota has issued a service bulletin regarding the P0420 trouble code that could apply to your vehicle, to be sure if this bulletin applies to your car I will need the VIN# and e-mail to tedrttr@yahoo.com with that information.

07 caliber p0420

Might still be under warranty. P0420 is a catalytic converter efficiency code. Usually this means the catalytic converter is no longer able to do it's job. The computer knows when it is failing and sets this code.

Check with your dealer to see if the catalytic converter might still be covered as it is an emissions component.
