If the rear O2 sensor is to the rear of the back converter, then yes, it probably is. If the rear O2 sensor is forward of the back converter, then no, look elsewhere.

I have Service engine light on for my nissan 2001 maxima. Dealer ran the diagnostics and said Bad o2 Sensor. Today , the Service engine light is gone.. Do I need to replace the part anyway or wait for the...

if it comes back, yes you will need. without pre o2 sensor your car wont idle, it will use lots of fuel and you will face drivability problems if it is post o2 sensor, it is there to check if catalytic converter is ok or not(it won caue drivability problems but may consume little more fuel to run rich and to save catalytic converter). if sensor is broken you need to replace it. if you have error for post o2 sensor but it is ok, this means your catalytic converter is going bad.

Hello: Code 420 normally indicates a catalytic converter is operating below 60% efficiency. You need to take your car to another shop and request a COMPLETE diagnosis not a dart board guess.

Hello,

I am assuming this has the 3.0L V6.
Is the check engine light on? I think it probably is. If yes, then have the trouble codes read and report them back here for help with your diagnosis.
My initial thoughts would be:
1. Catalytic converters plugged up (if you have an engine code reporting O2 sensor bank issues).
2. Cam shaft synchronizer (especially if you're hearing squeaking from the top of the engine on the drivers side down near the thermostat).
3. EGR Valve / IAC Valve
Finally; just a regular tune-up.

My money is on the Catalytic converters needing to be replaced, however please report back with trouble codes.

Best regards,

Engine code 430 for 2001 toyota highlander

Possible Causes:
Oxygen (O2) sensor not working correctly
Damaged or leaking exhuast (pipe, manifold, catalytic converter)
Damaged catalytic converter

Diagnostic Help:
To diagnose a P0430 trouble code we begin by checking for exhaust leaks under the vehicle. Then use an oscilloscope to check the waveforms of both upstream and downstream O2 sensors. The rear reading should vary, the front should be steady. Replace as necessary. Check the rear Heated O2 Sensor. Check the catalytic converter, replace if necessary. If necessary, check for wiring and component. hopes this helps thanks

Eratic Ideling and Wants to die, Backfire through Intake.

I also have 2001 S10, 4.3 V6 Engine code W, 4x4, Automatic, 137,000 miles. About 3 weeks ago, I had intake manifold gasket changed and every since then has been doing the same as yours. I suspected that the yahoo who did the gasket change got the distributor in wrong. I had one other mechanic tell me my engine was shot but the distributor , firing order was all right. Then I had another mechanic tell me that the distributor was in wrong and they fixed it but it didn't run any better. They also said the catalytic converter was plugged causing back pressure in engine. This past weekend I cut the catalytic converters (2 of them) off at the y pipe and now the engine will actually idle but still a little rough (and loud) but now the O2 sensors are not able to do their job. They say catalytic converters are only good for about 10 yrs anyway. To get the one piece replacement cats pipe in you have to drop the tranny crossmember, and to drop that it looks like you have to remove the torsion bars or at least one.

Hope this helps.

How many o2 sensors are there?....my check engine light has been on for quite some time and thinking of replacing... my truck runs lean...

Your car should have two O2 sensors. One will be located after your catalytic converter. The other one should be located before your catalytic converter somewhere between your headers and your cat. Rarely, on some vehicles, there's a 3rd O2 sensor which is located also somewhere between the catalytic converter and the headers.

Your check engine light may not be pointing to bad O2 sensors. The light can mean anything from a loose/faulty gas cap to a transmission issue.

This light comes on when the computer detects a fault of some sort in its diagnostic tests. If it keeps detecting this issue, the light will remain on. If the light turns off, then it has detected that the issue may no longer be present.

In order to find out what the exact reason was for your light, You need to have your car computer scanned to retrieve the code that the computer would have stored when the light triggered. Most garages will do this free of charge. The code will tell you what may have caused the light to initially turn on.

Not just a faulty catalytic converter will trigger this code. Many other issues can trigger this code.

  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Delayed spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
Possible solutions:
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter.
  • Replace Coolant Temperature Sensor
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2)
  • Replace the catalytic converter
  • Have timing adjusted
