The starter turns the flywheel. check for missing teeth on flywheel but first check bendix gear on the starter that is more likely the problem.

There are teeth on the fly wheel and you may have broken one or more teeth. You may have to replace the fly wheel. When you turn the fly wheel by hand you make the good teeth so the starter will work.

1992 subaru legacy starter wont engage fully and makes a loud grinding noise

Sounds like it is not toughing 100% and making full gear contact with the fly-wheel. Replace starter or the misalignment can burr the flywheel causing rounding and subsequent damage to the device.

Flywheel or something grings against the starter when clutch is engaged

There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

2000 olds alero cranks then makes a metal grinding sound and won't start

You need to have your flywheel: replaced.Your starter motor engages against the fly wheel at the back of the motor. Every time your motor stops it tends to be in the same few positions (just the way things work) so there is more stress on some parts of your fly wheel than others. Because of this the teeth wear out on the fly wheel which means the starter can correctly engage on the fly wheel which is the grinding noise.

1996 manual jetta won't start. It won't even crank. There is a whinning noise when I turn the key from the engine but that's it.

Sounds like the starter drive is not fully engaging with the fly wheel... might try to tap firmly on the body of the starter while you turn the key but be careful not to hit the wires... Might get you going enough to get to a garage and have it checked. good luck!

OK go to the starter and pull on the smaller red wire. This is a fusible link and can look good while you are pulling id the wire give you will need to repair it remember the wire can be burnt inside of the cover and you will not know it until you pull on it

When starting the truck it won't start around the 5th time

your best bet is to remove the cover at the flywheel. With the key off. you should be able to take a screw driver beside the starter into the teeth of the flywheel and rotate the engine by hand. Mark the place you start with tape or a spot of paint just to make sure you get it turned all the way around during the inspection. If you find nothing wrong, take the starter back off and return it. I have seen them come bad right out of the box.

You need to pull the starter out and check the drive gear. If the drive gear is no good you will have to replace the starter. Make sure the cogs on the fly wheel are okay. If the fly wheel is damaged you will have to replace the fly wheel.
