My chevy s10 slips going into over drive. I was

The guy I want to buy a 98 chevy s10 from says that the transmission slips going into overdrive. It shifts fine in 1,2and3. I was told that there is a fluid that I can put (not transmission fluid) in it to clear it up. will the fluid help or is there something more serious going on or that will be going on?

Yes you can put transx in the transmission and it helps with shifting and slipping or lucas trans but i would say it may help a bit but there is a problem with the trans and only going to get worse

Transmission over drive is causing the transmission to slip. When I take off the overdrive the transmission functions normally but it uses much more gas.

Roger, that doesn't even make a whole lot of sense to me. If the overdrive is causing the transmission to slip, wouldn't it also cause the fuel mileage to go down? Are you sure the transmission is slipping? Or is the transmission simply shifting in and out of overdrive? If it is, is it shifting at the proper speeds? Driving at around 40 - 50 Mph will sometimes make the transmission go in and out of overdrive repeatedly. This can be perfectly normal.

Have you checked your transmission fluid level?

Is your overdrive off light flashing? If the transmission is actually slipping the OD OFF light should be blinking at you to let you know there is a transmission problem. Either that, or the Check Engine light will be coming on. In either of these cases, you need to scan your onboard computer network for possible fault codes.

My Chevy S10 will not shift to overdrive at all. Earlier it shifted to overdrive when I had drove for a while

The Overdrive solenoid may be clogged or is electiicallyl bad. The transmission might benefit from a flush and fill for about $100. If this doesn't solve the problem, then a rebuild is indicated for this particular transmission.

Good luck on this repair.

Loud whine then knock in overdrive

well, without hearing the noise myself, i could guess that the torque converter clutch might be going bad. the torque converter is the part that transfers the power from the engine to the transmission via viscous fluid motion, the converter also has a clutch that internally provides a direct connection inside the converter for better fuel economy. but as with anything labeled as a clutch, it wears down to a point where is slips. the noise your hear could be the torque converter clutch slipping. i owned a 90 astro van with the same drivetrain that made a noise similar to what you speak of up hills. while driving up hills, fully depress the accelerator and if the clunking noise occurs, then the whine goes away as you accelerate faster in a lower gear, very likely this is the case. you would have to have a transmission shop diagnose further. i drove that old van for five more years cause i didn't want to pay to have transmission repaired. it can be very expensive.

I have a 98 Tahoe that just recently after driving on the highway coming into town to a stop and then accerating again has a big thump (****) almost like someone bumping the rear of the car. A friend said...

If you think it could be the overdrive, try driving with the transmission selector in 3rd, rather than overdrive. If it helps, may have diagnose the problem.

Another option, not sure if that year model had the tow/haul function, where you could set the transmission shift point to change because you were hauling a trailer.

If you can narrow down the problem to the transmission for sure, I would still start with a transmission filter & fluid change, cheaper than rebuilding a transmission.

89-98 chevy blazer

It's not worth doing all that conversion, buy the time you spend the time and money to convert the 89 4.3 to work on the 98 blazer, it would be cheaper to install a 98 vortec rebuild. The 89 4.3 have a TBI fuel injection system and the ecm on the 98 will not work and the bad news is that the ecm on the 98 also controls the transmission shift points and the 89 will not, so even if you swap the ecm to have the 89 4.3 engine work. the transmission will not shift. Sorry for the bad news but it would be cheaper to replace the 98 engine with the years of 1996 to 2001. Good luck and hope this helps.

Im not sure what type of transmission I can put in this Chevy.

Or you can go to an auto wrecker and get a good used one for a lot less. And it'll be just as good or better than a rebuilt. Just pull the dipstick out and make sure the oil is clean and doesn't smell burnt. And check the mileage of the vehicle it's coming out of. Never be afraid of used parts. You drive to the parts store on them!

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem
