1) Battery dies while car sits overnight. Brand new battery. 2) Car will die sometimes while driving. The light that seems to be for the coolant comes is on along with other lights for the SRS, etc when car is working but goes away after the car dies and I attempt to restart. Coolant is full. Removing the Plus battery cable then reattaching sometimes solves the problem. What is the problem?

Check the ground to battery and clean posts if need be, also make sure that the alternator is at proper charging rate. a fully charged battery with engine off should read at least 12.5 or higher. when running the battery should read 14 volts or a little higher. clean corrosion from case also if need be. if the above does not work check engine ground.

My car off and on acted like it was going to die. Like it couldn't get any juice to run. Shut it off and it would go away. My car died on me and I coasted to a parking lot.

I have had that. My car started after cooling over night.
I was on a 500km long drive and my radiator had been damaged midway. I did not see the indicator or realize that it heated up excessively causing the ecu shut the engine off. After overnight cooling, the car would start. I drove to the nearest service centre and discovered that the coolant had been drained due to a small crack at the rubber tubing connecting the plastic radiator housing. It was fixed for less than $1 + coolant+ labour and I could drive the rest of the distance peacefully.

Check for the obvious
(1) fuel available in tank (indicator)
(2) battery available (dash board indicator)
(3) any other indicators on dashboard that light up or blink
(4) pay attention to heat indicator. Inspect Coolant level
(5) ensure fuel reaches the engine. no blockages.

Check the connections from the battery. Loose battery terminal, corroded wires, loose from other end of wires. Simply trace it back, more that likely loose on starter end

Two ways the the battery was the problem:
1. It was not the right voltage battery installed.
2. It was a faulty battery...which is very possible.

(1) Loose connection on your battery terminal(s). You should not be able to move the connections on your battery by hand at all. (2) Loose or missing alternator belt. (3) Faulty alternator. (4) Electrical short.

I have a 1990 Volvo 240 recently the car started to die at random times while driving. When it dies all the dash lights come on can't start it for a bit afterwards. I replaced the battery and it seemed...

  • This is classic of your alternator going bad. Sometimes, when it first begins to go bad it will function on and off. Soon it just stops charging the battery all together. The battery has one function and that is to start the car. Then the alternator is ran by the belt and charges the battery and in effect runs the car. The reason for the lights coming on is the power fail in the car.
  • Buying a new battery worked for a short time because the fresh battery ran the car but with no alternator to charge the battery the car soon died again.
  • The fix is to replace the alternator. Do it soon or even that new battery will go bad from being drained so much.

I am having the same problem with my 2004 Elantra. I have had the alternator tested twice and did replace the battery. This morning I had it running ad put a volt meter on it ( red to the battery pos black to the engine block) I did get a reading of 14 volts for about 30 seconds then the idle lowered and the voltage dropped to 12 volts. I tried this again later but could not get a voltage reading above 12 volts with the motor running. Any suggestions?
