Question about 2002 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute 6 cyl. that when it rains the engine starts to cut out and loses power. Also have a rough idle and service engine light comes on. I have to take it out of overdrive due to constant banging, transmission shifting and loss of power, seems like it wants to die. Soon as it dries out everything is fine. Any suggestions on what might be causing this.

Sounds like a cracked distributor cap or perhaps a bad seal. It would be a good idea to replace the distributor cap and rotor.

Why does my check engine light keep coming on for the same codes?

Cylinder #2 is misfiring (P0302) and the Trib is Misfiring at startup (P0316). Mazda Tributes and Ford Escapes are notorious for cylinders going bad. You can either change each cylinder as it decreases in performance, or suck it up and do them all at once.

Washed the engine on a 2002 mazda tribute 3.0l it melted the egr and will only idle no power

You probably will have to take your Mazda to a mechanic and have everything replaced that you ruined by power washing the engine.

Is number 1 plug at the back and where is the coil

The number one cylinder is always in the front of the engine.
The 4 cyl engine uses one coil for all 4 cylinders.
The 6 cyl engine uses one coil on each plug.

REPAIR MANUAL NEEDED!!!!

The 2002, 2003 and 2004 Mazda MPV's all use the same Ford 6 cyl. 3.0 duratec engine. The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute of those years use the same engine. Therefore if you need an inexpensive engine repair manuel for your 2002 MPV, get the Haynes ($20.00) 2001-2007 Escape/Tribute manuel. Mazda sells the a MPV shop manuel for $180.00. I also own a 2002 Mazda MPV LX. 75k miles.
