The car has to be running when checking the trans fluid. It should have reading guages on the bottom of the stick with minimum/max levels. You should take it out and wipe it then reinsert it to read level...It should have fluid at least on the bottom 2 inches of the stick. If noting then your low and need to add. make sure your putting the trans fluid in the correct place and not mixing it with the oil fill...

SOURCE: C180 auto trans fluid check, no dipstick

The dipstick can be purchased from your local dealer, OR you have to go to your dealer for service (or a local mechanic who has the proper dipstick for your car). More and more car companies are not including the dipsticks in their vehicles in order to have the vehicle "properly serviced" by the dealer, and the dealer only. Unfortunately, the dipstick is quite expensive the last time I checked, and you may have to shop around to find a mechanic that wont charge you a whole lot of money to check your fluid for you.

Thanks for asking!

How do i put transmission fluid myself in a 1997 mercedes benz

Transmission fluid (ATF), like engine oil, should be checked regularly. The transmission box has a dipstick, like the engine. To check the ATF level, firstly locate the dipstick which is in the engine compartment. You will see the tube which carries the dipstick runs at an angle to the transmission box as opposed to the engine oil dipstick which runs almost directly down.
Checking the level involves starting the car and while the engine is running with the selector lever in P (Park) remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, then push it back and remove it again. Now you can check the level. Fluid is usually added into the dipstick tube.
If you are losing ATF, check for leaks because the A/T usually does not consume ATF.

2004 Golf 2.0FSI auto transmission, 77,000 kms, dealer serviced since new, one owner (my wife). Auto trans is slipping and not selecting gears/keeping gears properly. Is this a common problem? VW dealer...

Check fluid level first to ensure that there is enough hydraulic pressure for brake bands and clutches to engage fully. Have the engine running in 'park' and remove the transmission fluid dip stick. Check level, colour and smell: it should be pink/red with no hint of any burnt aroma. If it is tinged brown this is due to clutch surface material wearing away. The acrid over cooked smell will arise if the brake bands are continuously slipping and generating heat. If the level looks low top with extra fluid via the transmission dipstick tube (do not confuse this with the gearbox oil dipstick) VW is a popular make and there will be auto transmission specialists out there with extensive knowledge. It would be no harm phoning around to ask for them to give it an assessment and then to ask the cost of adjustment, overhaul, repair or replacement.

The dipstick is where you fill it =) (lol) use a funnel too, otherwise you will stain your garage floor.

Wheni drive Geo Metro 1997 over 1 hour the transmission does not work.

Does your car have an automatic transmission? If so start by checking the fluid level. There will be a dipstick in engine compartment that is for the transmission. This you will have to do by having the engine running and transmission in park. Pull dipstick out and check were the reading is on the dipstick. If it is low add transmission fluid. Note: Check owners manual for the correct type of fluid that should be used for your cars transmission. I have included a link that will help you with doing this procedure. http://www.ehow.com/video_104_check-automatic-transmission.html
If this doesn't help there are bigger problems going on inside the transmission. And if your car is using transmission oil you should get the leak checked out. I hope hope that this is helpful.

WHERE TO ADD TRANSMISSION FLUID ON A 1997 TOYOTA COROLLA WITH AUTO TRANSMISSION. ALSO, THERE IS A STREAM OF TRANS OIL EXITING JUST AHEAD OF THE TRANSMISSION ITSELF. IT APPEARS THAT EITHER THE SUPPLY-LINE...

you can add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube for the transmission. as far as the lines, most transmission fluid lines are rubber in the middle and aluminum on the ends, so they shouldn't rust. if its leaking fluid that fast, its probably a hole in the rubber part. also make sure the dipstick tube is seated well in the transmission. neither one of which is hard to fix, just determine where the leak is coming from first

It should have a dipstick, check it while running in park or neutral... If it needs fluid , fill through the dipstick VERY slowly, run throught the gears, and re-check
