Can you see water leaking out of the engine or you find evidence of water on the engine?

if the latter you may have a leak in your water cooling system somwhere and the steam is rising in the engine compartment and cooling on the hood turning back to water and landing on the engine this giving the impression that there is a leak there.
or it may be just humidity doing the same thing and you do not have any leak.

look for spots of water on the ground and note if your radiator is getting low. (water on the ground may be moisure from your AC this is normal )

also suspect a leak in your windshied washer these are situated in the hood so when they operate if they leak they leak straight down onto the engine. check their pipes for any leaks.

I have a 1999 land rover a4.0 i have a coolent leak in the water pump area it dosent look the water pump is leaking

Confirm that the leak is not from the pump.. With the engine cold and off, clean all surfaces which are wet. Make sure the top of the engine is not wet as well. Start engine and look for where the leak is using a flashlight. Be careful of moving parts.
Water pumps have weep holes that leak when the pump bearing is faulty, small holes on the top/bottom of the pump. Also look for leaks from the hose connected to the pump.

Water leaking from top of engine

Is it water or engine coolant leaking? Check the coolant level and see if its low. If the coolant level is low...the coolant system will need to be pressure tested and leak pinpointed. If you sure its water...I would look at the black windshield cowl. This cowl channel's away water and could be leaking on the motor. There is windshield washer hoses in the cowl that could be leaking. Good Luck

My 1996 ford explorer was running fine today. I came home and parked and then returned to find a puddle of coolant. I filled the radiator with water and the reserve with water. I ran the engine for...

make sure the engine is fully warmed up (check the temp gauge and feel the top hose from the radiator to the engine) that hose should be HOT and it you should NOT be able to calopse it-it should feel hard. If you do not have a leak under these conditions, you probably just have an overfull surge tank and it 'puked' out some fluid. If you top radiator hose is NOT hard after the engine is fully warmed up, you have something wrong-it could be as simple as a radiator cap that is not sealing properly, or a leaky hose, an intake manifold leak, or an internal leak in the engine (don't rule out a leaking radiator, it has end tanks that can and do leak).

Hi,iv got 2002 jaguar s type r last week it started leaking engine cooling liquid from back of engine above gearbox i tried evrything to see where it was coming from but couldnt find out so i assumed it...

yes you got it in one,, its an air lock stoping the water going round the heater, you need to blead the air out rad seal wont block up the heater,,,,iv used it many times,,,my old truck ran with it in for years!
look for a bleed scew on a water pipe and open it with the motor running let water ran out till no air is in it, top up header tank as well

There is a water leak from the top of the timing chain cover. Do I have to remove the whole cover along with the oil pan, a/c, ps pump and all brackets?

you shouldn't need to do anything quite so drastic. if you are leaking coolant and not oil, then its much easier than that. There are several coolant/heater hoses and the thermostat housing near the top of the timing cover, but when the engine is working properly there should be no water behind the front cover. top off the cooling system, run the engine, and watch to see where it starts leaking from when the engine gets warm.

Car overheated and now leaks coolant

Thats not a good sign. When a engine overheads, the heads tend to warp, especially aluminum heads. It could be something as simple as a hose or waterpump leaking, but because its associated with an overheat condition, I suspect a warped head. Most garages have a pressure tester where they can pressurize your coolant system and check for leaks without the engine running.

Water leak on manifold of 1996 susurban. looks like hydraulic line connected but suspect it might be rear heater hose that is leaking . any ideas?

I had this problem with my 1998 suburban.......there is a quick connect that goes into the  top of the engine close to the water pump.......the hose will come off without any tools....the quick connect screws into the top of the engine.....in fact my was so screwed up it busted off in the engine and I had to use an easy out to remove it.........
I went to O'reillys and they showed me what was leaking...... when its just leaking a little it hits the manifold and evaporates....so you never see any water...

Anti-freeze leak

If it's leaking at the top of the engine down. Look at the top of the engine at the front and you'll see a bleeder valve on top a black housing. These housings like to come apart at the glued seams. If it's leaking at the lower part of the engine towards the front, it could be your water pump leaking. Check your oil and if you see the color of the oil looking like chocolate milk, your water pump needs replaced, the oil will need changing as well. Do a coolant system pressure test and see if your hoses somewhere are leaking. Also check for your surge tank leaking. This is the tank that you put coolant into.
