Question about 1995 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

MY car will start but will not idle. I had it looked at and they said timing belt, I'm not so sure. Runs fine above idle. I've been told air flow sensor or spark plug wires.

What is wrong 95 BMW 318i starting issue and idle rough won't stat running?

Vane air flow (VAF) units are a common failure on these cars. It is the the sensor mounted inline on your intake tube that is aluminum and black plastic with a round twist plug. If you unplug it an it runs better that is most likely your culprit. The gentleman above is on the right track. Intake boot cracks/failures are quite common on these older cars too as are the EGR tubes/hoses - listen for air leaks/sucking noises.

The idle air sensor (IAC), made by Bosch looks like a small coke can with two tubes and a plug going to it. Sometimes they are hard to find/hidden under intake. They do go bad, but can usually be cleaned with car/brake cleaner. The internals should rotate; they are just an oscillating valve that regulates extra air to the intake.

You never said it it runs fine once it us up and going. If it does, it could also be a oxygen sensor. You should really consider having the codes read... it really shortens the list of parts to check!

Good luck!

I have an 89 honda accord sei. The car starts and runs fine when u first try it in the morning. Go to put it in rev or drive the idle drops so low it stalls and it will not start back up somtimes I get...

It is kinda rare but look at the mass air flow tube . Make sure that its not cracked , dry rotted or loose. When you put it in gear the engine/transmission mounts will allow a little too much movement due to old or bad mounts. This excessive movement causes the tube to crack.
Next time you start the vehicle have the hood up and while its idleing move the flex tube around . If it idles up/down or dies the tube is cracked. Good luck

Make sure there are no vacuum leaks around the mass air flow sensor. If it won't idle when stopped, change the Idle Air Control Valve. Reset the ECU module by removing the negative battery terminal and leave it aside for ten minutes and then reconnect it.

The car stalls out while driving sometimes, but it will start right back up with problem. Theres no engine light on, or anything else on.

. Check the Mass Air Flow Sensor voltages. Verify good battery voltage to the Mass Air Flow Sensor on the White/Black wire. Verify good grounds for the Mass Air Flow Sensor on the two Black wires - look for 0.05 volts or less to be ok. Check the output voltage from the Mass Air Flow Sensor on the White wire - specification is less than 0.5 volts key on engine off and 1.0 - 1.3 volts at warm idle. The Green/Orange wire at the Mass Air Flow Sensor is not used. The Mass Air Flow Sensor can test good and still be defective.

2. Make sure the timing belt is not off a tooth. Can check ignition timing to see if one bank is on. May need to get into compression on each bank but a timing belt off a tooth or two will idle poorly but can run better at higher RPM.

Sounds like a dirty mass air flow sensor but the hill thing is strange...Is the tank full when this happens? Could be a filter and would not hurt to change it (often neglected).

Rough idle

look on the back of your accordian like air intake will find a small crack...hard to see unless you flex it or at least look carefully....electrical tape will work as a temporary fix. A new flexible air intake hose....which runs from the air flow control box on the fender to the throttle body on top of the engine is about $100....but you can get one from a wrecker for about 5.

Engine Dies in Idel

being a certified mechanic has its advantages. there are multiple causes for that problem: lack of air or lack of fuel.
make sure the air filter is mostly clean.
check throttle plate (where air filter tube goes into motor), most likely black with soot and carbon. clean with tooth brush and gas, wipe off with clean rag. repeat ultil CLEAN.
low air flow past plate when closed (idle) will cause stall condition.
dirty throttle body is a common problem with lots of cars. causes engine stall.

dirty fuel filter will also cause this problem.. low fuel pressure at idle.

I also believe that your car is equipped with an idle air control valve. (regulates a bypassed air flow to motor at idle) this valve may be stopped up or non-functional. have local shop take a look, but there are ways to check valve if you consider yourself mechanically inclined
