Another Alternate Method For In-Line Engines
An alternate and perhaps somewhat quicker method is to follow the accompanying diagram which is arranged so that any piston can be at top center to start.
On Straight 8 Cars
Start with the cylinder in the firing position (piston up, both valve lifters down) and work around the diagram in the direction of the arrow. Count the cylinder in firing position as the first cylinder.
Rotate the engine one full turn to bring the same pair of pistons to top center, but now the opposite cylinder will be in firing position. Again start with the cylinder in the firing position and again work around the chart in the direction of the arrow.

† Step 2: Bolts 1 - 8 to 88 N·m (65 ft. lbs.)
† Step 3: Bolts 1 - 8 (again) to 88 N·m (65 ft. lbs.)
† Step 4: Bolts 1 - 8 turn an additional 1/4 Turn.
(Do not use a torque wrench for this step.)
NOTE: Bolt torque after 1/4 turn should be over 122
N·m (90 ft. lbs.). If not, replace the bolt.
