Question about 1999 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

We have a 99 VW Bug. The Speedometer works fine for a while, then it starts to jump around and dies out. When we restart the car it works fine and does the same thing. It takes between 20 minutes-1 hour into a drive usually before it acts up. We've had it in the shop and they said they can't fix it if it's not acting up then, which it never is of course. Any ideas???

The speed sensor is on the transmission, on top of the differential area. It would have silver insulation that resembles a tea bag protecting it from exhaust heat. Check the connection of the wire harness, it's probably dirty although I'd say just to replace it with a OEM replacement.

Bring it to a local VW only shop because they have a scan tool specific to your car. Shop that works on water cooled VW's only, not VW aircooled shop. Don't bring it to Autozone, PEP Boy because they will use a generic scan tool and give you conflicting fault codes. Good Luck and thank you.

Whats wrong with Helen?

The speed sensor might be bad. I used to own a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse with the same symptons. The car will start, but will not pass the 1st or 2nd gear, the speedometer will be at 0. I replaced the speed sensor and all the problems went away.

97 VW Jetta GLS, manual transmission. The speedometer stopped working & the fuel gauge is jumping around.

Hi Ken You seem to have two faults with your vehicle. One will be a speed sensor and the other possibly a bad connection. Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and pin point the problems (which the scan will do) and then sort them out. Regards John

Drive a 99 plymouth grand voyager expresso 3.3l flex fuel here is the problem. it has a rebuilt tranny that's less than 9mos old had the van one month drove fine now the first 20 minutes the...

The output shaft sensor is where the TCM gets its info. And what the speedometer runs off of. It is best to have a diagnostic ran on this first. But shooting from the hip, I would go for the output sensor.
