this van must absolutly be on a lift to change these mounts, the job is a 8 on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most difficult.

  • Dean Sep 14, 2012

Not true. All the mounts can be replaced without a lift, it just requires some dexterity. You just need a jack to support the engine/transaxle. I know, I've done it. And it certainly isn't an 8 out of 10, more like a 5, if that.

The best and easiest way for a diyer would be one at a time. also purchase a chiltons manual at auto parts store and invest in a good floor jack and also a two by four so when you support the motor with the jack the wood keeps you from poking a hole in the oil pan

What are the Mercury Villager 1998,must comuns problems? I want an pverall must comon issues..

The most common problem effecting 1st generation Mercury Villagers (1993-1998) are engine related. Fuel pumps are prone to failure so make sure you change the fuel filter every 50,000 miles to help prevent the fuel pump from overworking. You may also experience faulty fuel injectors so use a good fuel injector cleaner like Seafoam or Techron every 6 months. Other than this they are not bad vehicles and can be a good buy due to low resale value.

sounds like cam sensor in distributor is going. works cold fine, then as engine warms upo it starts going. is tach needle jumping too?

Buy reman rich porter on ebay for $200. sensor inside is not serviceable. common issue on 99-00.

Your brake light switch is bad or it has slipped out from where it's mounted, against the brake pedal. The lights will stay on until you change or fix that switch. Have it checked.

Changing a Timing Belt

at 150,000 miles pretty much everything could be worn out if it is all original, if the van is in really good shape no dents or bad dings paint good, interior is in really good shape and the van has been serviced on a regular basis then yes fix it, also this is a free wheeling engine so if the timing belt breaks there is no damage to the engine, if it ran good with no excess oil useage or engine noise fix it..

I do not think you have anything to worry about, I have replaced timing belts on villagers for years and have yet to see any engine damage. The 3.3 eng. is a free wheeling engine. Hope this helps out.

Belt question

You should clarify which engine it is, and you can look under the hood near the radiator for the serpentine belt instillation diagram that is on a sticker. Rick
