    IN TANK

    Aft-Of-Axle Tank

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    2. Depressurize the system and drain as much fuel as possible from the tank.

    3. Raise the rear of the truck and safely support it on jackstands.

    4. Disconnect the fuel supply, return and vent lines at the tank(s).

    7. If you have a metal tank: Support the fuel tank(s), loosen and remove the mounting straps. Remove the fuel tank(s).If you have a plastic tank: Support the tank and remove the bolts attaching the combination skid plate and tank support. Lower the tank and finish removing any hard-to-get-at hoses.

    8. Disconnect the lines and harness at the pump flange.

    9. Clean the outside of the mounting flange and retaining ring. Turn the fuel pump lock ring counterclockwise and remove.

Torque the plastic tank's attaching bolts to 25-35 ft.lb., without using thread locking compound. Fill the tank with a least 10 gallons of fuel. Turn the ignition key ON for three seconds. Repeat 6 or 7 times until the fuel system is pressurized. check for any fitting leaks. Start the engine and check for leaks

Drive 1988 ford f150 on the highway it dies and won,t start back. It acts like it is out of gas. Let it set 30 mins. and it starts right up

Fuel Pump-a possible. The time frame of 30 minutes will vary.
The armature on the pump motor is worn, as well as the tiny bearing,so it seizes or just stops conducting current.
Drop fuel tank and replace. May be able to remove all bed bolts but rear ones, and tip bed up.

Can't find the fuel filter on my 85 f150

If it a carbureted engine, it is on the carburetor. Remove the air cleaner housing and you'll see the filter screwed right into the carb with the fuel line feeding into the other side of it. (The filter is on the front side of the carb.) If you don't know what the filter looks like, look it up on autozone.com. They've got a picture of it.

Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter. First two things to look at there bud. I'd start there, then start inspecting the fuel lines.
