Question about Peugeot Liberte

2 Answers

Car will sometimes, but not always, drop down a gear and the D on the display will flash within a mile or so of starting a journey. It doesn't do it further into the journey, and it doesn't do it every time. Have also noticed that the D will start flashing if it is left running in the Park position for more than a couple of minutes. If I switch off and restart it will normally behave itself. I have had the gearbox taken out and completely rebuilt by a specialist auto gearbox co, and the present mileage is 60.000, its a 2001 Peugeot 806.

Thanks for your reply. My first thought was the fluid, so I drained that ( it was really black ) and refilled with the correct Dexron 3 fluid. Did not cure it, so I had the 'box taken out and completely rebuilt. I also fitted a new multi-function switch on top of the gearbox, just in case. I guess it must be down to one of the many sensors fitted ( engine speed, road speed, vacuum etc ) or to the gearbox 'brain' itself.
Can you explain how I can recognise the gearbox ECU, and whether I can check if it is working o.k.
The nagging suspicion I have is that the problem is somehow connected to the "kick-down" system, but I could be way off-course.

Sounds like you are having issues with the Overdrive which is common. A diagnostic test would pinpoint the exact problem. It is about $40 unless you have a hand-held scanner. I would also recommend changing tranny fluid and filter and possibly a tranny flush. Check the actuator if it is vacuum operated and make sure it is not leaky or sticking. You can perform a vacuum pressure test.

The light flashing is an indication that there is a problem with some electronic shift component, this would likely be a shift solenoid, this transmission is electronically controlled by a TCM (transmission control module) and it will store a trouble code for whatever part is causing the problem, this sticking issue that causes this intermittent problem can be caused by worn out transmission fluid, this fluid and the filter inside the transmission should be changed every 60,000 miles or about 100,000 Km's, so if the transmission has never had a fluid and filter change do that 1st, if the problem persists have the TCM tested for fault codes, then diagnostics can be run and the problem repaired, it is very unlikely the trans is defective, just a shift solenoid issue.

My 1993 Vette is driving me crazy!! It seems to always start 1st thing in the morning. Then I can drive it all day sometimes without any problems (doesn`t happen very often anymore) and some times I will...

Electrical issues are the most difficult to fix. If you can't duplicate the problem in the shop, you're usually out of luck. It could be a weak relay for things like the fuel pump, a weak electrical connection somewhere, problems with the circuit board inside the engine computer, and so on. It would help if you could narrow down the area of interest like fuel or spark. Carry a can of starting fluid and a spark plug tester and be ready to check things when it quits running or won't start. And check the computer for trouble codes even if the check engine light doesn't come on.

I have a Peugeot 307 HDI. The hazard warning lights flash intermittently. Some days I drive about 60 miles and no flashing. Other days they can flash on anything up to 10 times during a similar journey....

I think the problem is in the switch, I would start with that, try and find a used one in a salvage yard to save money if the guess is incorrect.

Have you any ideas what i should check next?

Even though your shifter doesn't show 1st gear, your transmission will start out in 1st, then shift into 2nd at around 10-15mph. If you start out with shifter in 2nd, you should feel the gear change.
About all the average person can do with automatics is check the fluid, and possibly drop the pan and change filters. sometimes that helps with slipping or balky transmissions, but not always.
Good luck, Bill. Maybe somone else has some ideas?

I had the same problem or more so that my temp would run cold for miles and miles then go to normal and drop. It was my glow plugs. They needed to be changed. My boyfriend changed them himself in 10 minutes after I had been quoted 2 HOURS for labour!!
