Hi. There is a speed sensor mounted on the transmission. Check the wires that lead from the sensor to the instrument cluster in your dash. Make sure the speedometer is connected to the sensor, and the connection is not loose. If the wiring at the sensor, and speedometer are ok, simply replace the speed sensor.

Very common problem. gm will want to sell you a whole cluster. but there are people out there that will fix just the speedo. i can do it. i live in west texas if that helps.
