    cool thanks!
i did clean out the maf and TB with TB cleaner but havent checked the regulator. funny you say that because there was no obvious FI port i could check the fuel pressure from so that has never been done so far. my dad has the same-ish truck with a FI port at the back of the head, damn close to fire wall. but mine has i looking in the wrong place?

Check compression. If not within spec, follow it with a cylinder leakdown test. You may have bad piston rings, especially if you've noticed it consuming oil.

Check the fuel pressure regulator, make sure it's working properly and also clean out the MAF sensor with MAFcleaner. it sounds like your having the engine go lean under load. Good luck

Check the ohm's reading on the fuel injectors, they should each read around 14-16 ohm's cold for most 1997 GM engines, and if any fuel injectors are not within range replace them.

Like many others, I'm having trouble with my '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 L engine and 4X4. Engine sporadically misfires, especially when coming to a stop. Sometimes dies on idle or startup....

Make sure the ignition coil drive is in proper sync. The sync should be at or close to 0. Also try an engine decarb this works great on 4.0 engines. Also if the misfire is coming for #3 there is a bulliten on installing a heat sheild around the #3 injector because it takeing a lot of heat from the exhaust mainfold that sits right under it.

I have a 97 pontiac gp i had it scanned to see why my service engine soon light was on it came back that cylinder 5 was misfiring i changed the coil pack, plugs, and wires but it still say cylinder 5 misfire...

Replace your #5 cylinder fuel injector. You rough idle sounds like low, or no fuel to the cylinder. Your hesitation on accelleration says the same.. A new fuel injector should resolve your issue.

I hope this helps you, and I wish you luck on your repair.
