Hi there,

The belt is called a 'Serpentine' belt. Named for the way it winds in and around the pulleys.

Before proceeding, look for a diagram (Under the hood somewhere) of the routingnoisy - 2.gif for the belt. If none exists, draw a picture. This will help you putting the new one on.

Anyway, this single belt is held tight by a spring loaded tensioner pulley. Itwill be a smaller one, attached to an arm, not a pump or anything.

It'sthe arm that is spring loaded. The tension on the belt is relieved bythe controlled application of force on this arm. Nothing needs to beremoved, no pry bars are needs

There are different types, requiring different tools. Look for a 1/2" square hole on the arm. Ifthere, you'll need a 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar. A short extension too.

If not, you'll need a socket that fits on the nut of the pulley. Plus the ratchet.

Set the ratchet so it extends upward, above the engine.

Positionyour self to be able to move the arm one handed and still not hityourself in the face if it slips. Push (or pull), slowly building upuntil the belt is loose enough to to slip off of one of the otherpulleys.

Then slowly release the tension on the arm.

Putting the new one on is pretty much a reverse of this procedure.

From your description, I gathered you wanted to replace the belt. If it was the idler pulley, the belt still need to come off.

At this point just loosen the nut on the pulley and replace it. Then put the belt back as described.

Hope you find this to be very helpful

Best regards,

1995 nissan maxima alternator replacement

1995-98 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the splash guard on the right side of the vehicle.
  3. Loosen the alternator belt idler pulley.
  4. Slip the drive belt off the alternator pulley.
  5. Remove the four air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Remove the radiator fan and fan shroud.
  7. Move the air conditioning compressor forward.
  8. Disconnect the alternator harness connector.
  9. Remove the alternator mounting bolts, and lower the alternator from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Hold the alternator in place and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Plug in the alternator harness connector.
  3. Move the air conditioning compressor back into location.
  4. Install the radiator cooling fan and shroud.
  5. Install the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Place the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
  7. Tighten the drive belt to the proper tension with the idler pulley.
  8. Install the splash guard.
  9. Connect the negative battery terminal.
Proper belt tension is important. A belt that is too tight may cause alternator bearing failure; one that is too loose will cause a gradual battery discharge and/or belt slippage, resulting in belt breakage from overheating.

The pulley system is turning sluggish just replace two alternators

Your pulley system has a idler. This is a round and the back of your belts ride on it to keep tension on the belts, replace the idler pulley.

How to change alternator belt

alternator and air conditioning compressor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the idler pulley bolt.

The replacement of the inner belt on multi-belted engines may require the removal of the outer belts.
To replace a drive belt, loosen the adjusting and mounting bolts of the component which the belt is driving. Move the component inward to relieve the tension on the drive belt.
Slip the belt off the component pulley and match the new belt with the old belt for length and width. The old belt will be slightly longer. After a new belt is installed correctly, adjust the tension.
  1. Turn the adjustment bolt at the top of the idler pulley bracket. Clockwise rotation will tighten the belt; counterclockwise will loosen it.
  2. Keep the idler pulley bolt snug (but not tight) while adjusting belt tension. The adjustment bolt should turn with moderate force.

After adjustment is satisfactory, tighten the idler pulley bolt, and then tighten the adjustment bolt.

Reconnect the negative battery cable.

When replacing more than 1 belt, it is a good idea to make note or mark what belt goes around what pulley; this will make installation easier if you mix up the belts.

Power steering belt replacement I can't find out why the adjustment wont move

There should be an adjustment pulley (idler pulley) near there for power steering. You have to loosen the center nut on pull first, then on bottom of that bracket that pulley is mounted to, is a bolt to turn one way and the other to loosen, or tighten. It slides pulley up and down to loosen and tighten.

My idler pulley is making a squeaky light grinding niose.

Any Auto Parts store or even a Wallmart may have a WD 40. I would first try to spray this behind or right where you see the Axel of this Idle pulley.
Unfortunately it may be getting old and dried out.
If you have any grease or even - sounds funny - Vaseline - try smearing this on where the Axel meet's the round pulley.

How do you change the alt.

1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Jack up right front of car. Be sure to protect yourself with jackstands and rear wheel chocks. Safety first!
2) Remove the engine undercover (plastic under engine protector) on the right side
3) Remove the right front wheel.
4) Remove the right hand side inspection cover inside the wheel well. (I did not say this was a simple job.)
4a) Optional: Curse Nissan engineers for lack of foresight in maintenance.
5) Loosen the belt idler pulley (center of the pulley itself, I think its 14mm, but Do NOT loosend the bracket bolt)
6) Loosen the idler pulley tension (large, vertical nut above the idler pulley)
7) Remove the belt.
8) Replace with new belt.

Install is opposite of removal. You may have to wiggle a bit to slip it on correctly, but be patient, it will go
To replace alternator:

9) Get your **** under the car, fully supported on jackstands, and remove the 4 Air conditioner bolts
10)Slide the A/C compressor forward (don't drop it on your head!)
11) Disconnect the alternator harness connector (This may be tricky to do while mounted. If so, then with the help of a friend, remove the alternator following the steps below and remove the connection after the alternator is loose. DO NOT let the alternator hang by the wiring harness connections.)
12) Remove the wiring harness bracket from the alternator.
13) Remove the alternator upper and lower bolts. Slide Alternator down and forward to remove.
14) Install is opposite of removal.
Good Luck!
