Question about Mercury Cougar
Have you used a scan tool to see which door is showing ajar when all are closed?
The only problem is there are 4 more sensors on the passenger and rear and liftgate doors. A scan tool would tell you which door is the concern. W/O it you will have to keep guessing. Sometimes soaking each latch down with wd40 will free up a stuck switch showing ajar when closed.
I would advise you to take the car to the Dealer. If you want to purchase the tool, You will need a IDS or NGS or WDS or a sophisticated aftermarket scan tool. The price for these start at about 500$.
In these Models, there are certain issue's with Modulator. But, again, i do not want you to guess as it is usually a more than an hour DIY and needs tools to perform this. The only user Fixable option i to change Door Switches which you already done!!
Let me know, if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
