YES THERE IS, IT'S CALLED A NEUTRAL START SWITCH / BACK UP LIGHTS SWITCH.IT'S LOCATED ON THE SIDE ( LEFT SIDE ) OF THE TRANSMISSION HAS THREE WIRE'S. ONE WIRE POWER, ONE BACK-UP LIGHTS, ON STARTER. WITH CAR IN PARK HAVE SOME ONE PUT IGNITION KEY TO ON NOT START AND PUT IT IN REVERSE WHILE YOU CHECK VOLTAGE ON WIRES ONCE YOU KNOW WHICH ONE IS FOR BACK UP LIGHTS PUT BACK IN PARK, NOW CHECK OTHER WIRE FOR VOLTAGE WHILE THEY TURN KEY TO START AND OFF START TO OFF, LOOK FOR TEST LIGHT TO FLASH, IF IT FLASHES SWITCH IS O.K, GO OVER TO STARTER ASSEMBLY ON SMALL WIRE CHECK WITH TEST LIGHT WHILE SOME ONE TURN KEY TO START IF YOU HAVE VOLTAGE AT SMALL WIRE REPLACE STARTER ASSEMBLY.

If it was me i would check the safety switch on the clutch if its a stick give these websites a try its www.alldatadiy.com and www.autozone.com you can also stop by your local jeep dealer ship and talk to someone in the parts department about the problem you are having wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.

Will not start no spark at coil. I replaced coil

Try putting it in neutral and starting it. These Jeeps have a neutral safety switch to prevent starting if the vehicle is in drive. Some times when they fail, it won't start in park but it will start in neutral. Here is a good link to a site for learning about Jeep ignition problems. Click on the other links on the site too.

2006 jeep grand cherokee won't start every now and then dearler can't find anything everything comes on lights dash radio works but will not start one time got it started in neutral

gear selection cable might be out of adjustment. neutral safety switch acting up. possibly a defective ignition control module. they get flaky like that. work fine then all of a sudden they wont start 1nce or twice, then they work fine for months then dont work for a day or two.

My 1992 mazda 929 will start time to time it turns but it not getting the fire to start every time what should i do???

I'm having the same problem now with my 95 mazda 929, i'm being told it could be 1 of 3 things if the starter is good, it could be the neutral safety switch, starter relay, or the ignition switch going bad

2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7 automatic wont turn the starter over. LIghts good. Battery good. Could it be the starter, cables to the starter, neutral safety switch?

have same problem, ratan9 solution is pretty junk and I dont know why waste time posting it. After talking to local shop, to "test" the neutral safety switch, try to start in neutral, try to move shifter "farther" into park and turn key, listen to any clicks possible. If moving to neutral starts it you've got a bad switch. All the searching i've done it's either the safety switch, the ignition switch or a short in the harness somewhere

I have a 95 cutlass and sometimes it don't start. I turn the ignition and the lights etc come on but that's it. I don't even get any "click" from the starter likes its trying to start. What I have noticed...

I had the same problem with my 1995 Cutlass Supreme. Finally it would not start at all and I noticed the security light on the dash would not go off after I turned the key. It wound up being the ignition switch. I replaced it and no problems. The only trouble is that your old ignition keys do not work with the new switch.

95 jeep cherokee country 6 cyl auto. wont crank all the time

Bad solenoid i would guess. Not making a connection there. Any basic wiring and ignition switch problems should be alleviated by jumping the starter with a screwdriver. I would check the solenoid and starter brushes

2001 jeep grand cherokee won't start. i turn key on and all power comes on inside but wont crank.

Your dealership can read the codes entered into your car's computer every time it malfunctions. Same problem as yours, however, also gets worse, back up lights won't work, sticks in park (in the gas stationing) (very embarrassing), will only run with foot on gas, etc. It was the "neutral safety switch". $500 fix but runs and starts perfectly all the time.

95 cherokee sport stalling

Since the car stall only in the drive position, it sounds(i'm not there to actually ck the car)like when the engine torques, it might be pulling on a harness somewhere and killing the ignition. Do this, start the car and under the hood while the engine is running, move or jiggle the harnesses around and see if the car stalls. If the car stalls try to pinpoint the location on the harness and look for frayed or broken wires.

Starting issues

ASE mechanic.
A couple of different scenerios. first could be the ignition switch not suppling voltage to the starter. You might have good battery voltage at the starter, but not the trigger voltage from the ignition. thats the small wire on the starter. OR if i cranks a couple of times and then starts it might be a crank sensor for those engines are known for that sensor problem. keep me posted

Short in ignition harness shutdown jeep cherokee sport

If its completely not doing anything, it may be the park-neutral safety switch- it engages when you put the jeep into park, and if bad will not let anything happen- its as if the jeep is still in gear, and it kills everything. Jiggle your gearshift, go in and out of park a few times- might help.
Other fix is to open the hood, find the starter relay, remove the black plastic cover over the relay guts, and with the ignition switch on, press down on the relay- it bypasses the safety switch, and should start right up. You won't shock yourself- we've been doing it intermittently for two years.
