Question about 2003 Pontiac Bonneville

How do i remove the calipers from the mounting bracket. I can't get the calipers off to remove the pads. I removed the bottom mounting bolt but I can't get the top one off. Do I need a special tool. 2003 Bonneville SSEI

No special tool is needed but you will have to remove that top bolt before you can slide the caliper off of the rotor. Sometimes it may be necessary to put 2 lugs back on to hold the rotor in place for leverage, but the top bolt must be removed.

Do you have the actual caliper piston fully pushed into the rear of the caliper? Not the bolts, the piston. It's in the center of the caliper and about as big around as the bottom of a tin can.

How to change brake pad and check rotors

To Remove:
  1. Drain brake fluid to ½ full level in reservoir.
  2. Remove the front wheels. toy_car_cam_frontbrakepads.gif

  3. Remove the front brake caliper assembly.
  4. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each of the 2 brake pads.
  5. Remove the wear indicator from each of the 2 brake pads.
To Install:
NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.

  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press piston into the caliper.
  2. Apply disc brake grease to the inside of each anti-squeal shim.
  3. Install the anti-squeal shims on each pad.
  4. Install the pad wear indicator clip to the pads.
  5. Install the pads with the pad wear indicator plate facing upward.
  6. Install the brake caliper with the 2 mounting bolts. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  7. Install the front wheels.
  8. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  9. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.

To Install:
  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press the piston into the caliper.
  2. Coat both sides of the outer anti-squeal shim with pad grease.
  3. Install anti-squeal shims to each pad.
  4. Install wear indicators on the 2 brake pads.
  5. Install the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  6. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  7. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  9. Install the rear wheels.

  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the front wheel.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the rear disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the rear disc.
  2. Install the rear brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bracket bolts as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the bracket bolt 46 ft-lb (61.8 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the bracket bolt 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  3. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 32 ft-lb (43 Nm)
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.

How do you replace the front and rear brakes in a 2003 pontiac Grand Prix


Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Inspect the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Remove fluid from the reservoir until the level is lower then half way between the MAX and MIN levels.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Install 2 wheel nuts to secure the rotor on the hub.
  4. Remove the bottom brake caliper pin bolt.
  5. Pivot the brake caliper body upward and secure out of the way. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
  6. Compress the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp. Figure of brake assembly with caliper raised showing brake pads in mounting bracket gmpc_l4.gif

  7. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads from the brake caliper bracket.
To Install:
  1. Install the brake pad retainers and both brake pads into the caliper bracket.
  2. Pivot the brake caliper down over the brake pads and into the brake caliper bracket. Insert the lower brake caliper pin bolt and torque bolt to 70 ft-lb. (95 Nm).
  3. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Refill the master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
  6. Check the master cylinder level and add fluid as necessary.
Rear To Remove:

  1. Inspect the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Remove fluid from the reservoir until the level is lower then half way between the MAX and MIN levels.

  4. Remove the upper caliper mounting bolt.
  5. Pivot the caliper down to access the pads.
  6. Remove the inboard and outboard pads from the caliper bracket.
  7. Remove the brake pad clips from the caliper bracket.
  8. Compress the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp and the old inner pad.
To Install:
  1. Install new brake clips in the caliper bracket.
  2. Install the inboard and outboard pads in the caliper bracket.
  3. Pivot the caliper up over the pads.
  4. Reinstall the upper mounting bolt and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  5. Remove the 2 wheel nuts securing the rotor.
  6. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
  7. Refill the master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
  8. Check the master cylinder level and add fluid as necessary.

How to change front brake pads on 2003 Chevy Suburban


Disc Brake Pads for Suburban 1500 Removal & Installation Front To Remove:

  1. Remove the cover on the master cylinder and siphon out 2/3 of the fluid. This step prevents spilling fluid when the piston is pushed back into the caliper bore.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Compress the brake piston back into its bore using a C-clamp.
  5. Remove the 2 caliper mounting bolts. Lift the caliper off the rotor.
  6. Remove the inboard and outboard pad.
  7. Remove and discard the anti-rattle clips.
To Install:

  1. Thoroughly inspect, clean and lubricate all caliper slide points, bolts and hardware.
  2. Install new anti-rattle clips.
  3. Position the inboard and outboard pads into the support bracket
  4. With the 2 pads in position, place the caliper over the brake rotor and align the holes in the caliper with those of the mounting bracket.
  5. Install the caliper mounting bolts through the sleeves in the inboard caliper ears and into the mounting bracket.
  6. Tighten the mounting bolts to: 80 lb. ft, (110 Nm).
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Add fluid to the master cylinder reservoirs so they are 1/4 in. (6.35mm) from the top.
  9. Test the brake pedal by pumping it to obtain a hard pedal. Check the fluid level and add fluid as necessary.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts. Suspend the caliper from the frame with mechanic's wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
  5. Remove the brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket.
  6. Remove and discard the anti-rattle clips.

To Install:
  1. Install new anti-rattle clips.
  2. Position the brake pads to the caliper mounting bracket.
  3. With the 2 pads in position, place the caliper over the brake rotor and align the holes in the caliper with those of the mounting bracket.
  4. Install NEW caliper mounting bolts. Tighten to: 30 lb. ft, (40 Nm).
  5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Refill the master cylinder to the proper level with fresh brake fluid. Pump the brake pedal slowly and firmly to seat the brake pads. Burnish the brakes as needed.

How do you change the front disk pads


The pads are mounted to the caliper. The caliper is bolted to the spindle bracket. There is brake hardware which should be replaced with the pads.
Look behind the wheel at the backside of the spindle bracket. The spindle bracket is on the verticle shaft with coils on one end and an A shaped bracket on the other. There are usually 2 bolts that may have normal bolt ends or "Allen" bit fittings.

When you buy the brake hardware you can check for the proper socket for the mounting bolt. You unbolt the caliper, use a rope or wire to suspend it under the frame without disconnecting the brake line.

The pads come off with the hardware. You need to compress the caliper pistons to make the new pads fit. Use a C clamp and an old pad to squeeze the pistons back into the caliper. Remove the Master Cylinder cover so fluid can return.

Then use a bonding chemical like "brake quiet" to mount the rear pad to the caliper piston. Mount outside pad to caliper and then slide caliper over the rotor on the spindle bracket. Lube the slides of the new brake hardware and bolt into place.

You should have the rotors checked for thickness and whether they are warpped before you put on the new pads.

Replace bake pads on f 150 2006 front and back


Jack truck up, remove wheel, remove caliper slide bolts (12mm i think), remove caliper. caliper mounting bracket will stay on truck if you are just doing a pad slap, the mounting bracket comes off with two bolts (18 mm i think) remove old pads, compress caliper piston with channel locks or a c-clamp, replace pads, lube up caliper slides with dielectric grease , tighten slide bolts, replace wheel. proceed to other side. Then befor you road test pump the break pedal. Once ya get a look at it, its pretty easy to see what ya need to do. Front and rear ar pretty mush the same.

How do I remove the front rotors from my 1999 honda accord

After removing the caliper body, unfasten the retaining bolts and remove the caliper mounting bracket, in order to remove the rotor

  1. Use a siphon or clean turkey baster to remove about half of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the tire/wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the caliper mounting bolts, then lift the caliper assembly away from the brake rotor.
  4. Use a suitable piece of wire to suspend the caliper assembly. This will prevent the weight of the caliper from being supported by the brake flex hose which will damage the hose.
  5. Once the caliper body and brake pads are removed, unfasten the caliper bracket mounting bolts, then remove the bracket from the rotor.
  6. Remove the rotor retaining screws.
  7. Remove the brake rotor by pulling it straight off the wheel mounting studs or if seized in place, remove the stubborn brake rotor by threading in two 8 x 1.25mm bolts, two turns at a time until the brake rotor is released.
To install:
  1. If necessary, completely retract the piston into the caliper using a large C-clamp or other suitable tool as provided in the front disc brake pad replacement procedures in this section.
  2. Install the brake rotor onto the wheel hub and tighten the mounting screws.
  3. Install the caliper mounting bracket and secure with the retaining bolts.
  4. Install the caliper and pad assembly over the brake rotor and mounting bracket and install the mounting bolts.
  5. Fill the master cylinder to the proper level with fresh brake fluid.
  6. Install the tire/wheel assembly and lower the vehicle.
  7. Pump the brake pedal until the brake pads are seated and a firm pedal is achieved before attempting to move the vehicle.
CAUTION Do not move the vehicle until a firm pedal is obtained.

  1. Road test the vehicle to check for proper brake operation.

This is for the front: Removal & Installation
  1. Remove 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Wheel
    • Caliper. Suspend the caliper from the frame with mechanic's wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
    • Caliper mounting bracket bolts
    • Caliper mounting bracket from the steering knuckle assembly
    • Brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket
    • Clips from the inside ends of the caliper mounting bracket and discard
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Clips to the inside ends of the caliper mounting bracket
    • Brake pads to the caliper mounting bracket
    • Inner pad (1 wear indicator)
    • Outer pad (2 wear indicators)
    • Caliper mounting bracket to the steering knuckle assembly
  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the caliper mounting bracket bolts:
    • Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.
    • Clean the threads of the bolt with brake parts cleaner or the equivalent and allow to dry.
    • Apply red Loctite®272 to the threads of the bolt.
  3. Install or connect the following:
    • Caliper mounting bracket bolts to the steering knuckle. Tighten the caliper guide pin bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) on 15 series or 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) on 25/35 series.
    • Caliper
    • Tire and wheel assembly
  4. Refill the master cylinder to the proper level with fresh brake fluid. Pump the brake pedal slowly and firmly in order to seat the brake pads. Burnish the brakes as needed.

The following procedure requires the use of a C-clamp and slip-joint lock pliers.
  1. Siphon off about 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoirs.

CAUTION The insertion of thicker replacement pads will push the piston back into its bore and will cause a full master cylinder reservoir to overflow, possibly causing paint damage. In addition to siphoning off fluid, it would be wise to keep the reservoir cover on during pad replacement.

  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the wheels.
When replacing the pads on just one wheel, uneven braking will result; always replace the pads on both wheels.
  1. Install a C-clamp on the caliper so that the frame side of the clamp rests against the back of the caliper and so the screw end rests against the metal part (shoe) of the outboard pad.
  2. Tighten the clamp until the caliper moves enough to bottom the piston in its bore. Remove the clamp.
  3. Remove the 2 Allen head caliper mounting bolts enough to allow the caliper to be pulled off the disc.
  4. Remove the inboard pad and loosen the outboard pad. Place the caliper where it will not strain the brake hose; it would be best to wire it out of the way.
  5. Remove the pad support spring clip from the piston.
  6. Remove the 2 bolt ear sleeves and the 4 rubber bushings from the ears.
  7. Riveted style brake pads should be replaced when they are worn to within 1/32 in. (0.8mm) of the rivet heads; bonded style pads should be replaced when they are worn to no less than 1/32 in. (0.8mm) of the backing plate.
  8. Check the inside of the caliper for leakage and the condition of the piston dust boot.
To install:
  1. Lubricate the 2 new sleeves and 4 bushings with a silicone spray.
  2. Install the bushings in each caliper ear. Install the 2 sleeves in the 2 inboard ears.
  3. Install the pad support spring clip and the old pad into the center of the piston. You will then push this pad down to get the piston flat against the caliper. This part of the job is a hassle and requires an assistant. While the assistant holds the caliper and loosens the bleeder valve to relieve the pressure, obtain a medium pry bar and try to force the old pad inward, making the piston flush with the caliper surface. When it is flush, close the bleeder valve so that no air gets into the system.
Make sure that the wear sensor is facing toward the rear of the caliper.
  1. Place the outboard pad in the caliper with its top ears over the caliper ears and the bottom tab engaged in the caliper cutout.
  2. After both pads are installed, lift the caliper and place the bottom edge of the outboard pad on the outer edge of the disc to make sure that there is no clearance between the tab on the bottom of the shoes and the caliper abutment.
  3. Place the caliper over the disc, lining up the hole in the caliper ears with the hole in the mounting bracket. Make sure that the brake hose is not kinked.
  4. Start the caliper-to-mounting bracket bolts through the sleeves in the inboard caliper ears and through the mounting bracket, making sure that the ends of the bolts pass under the retaining ears of the inboard shoe.
  5. Push the mounting bolts through to engage the holes in the outboard shoes and the outboard caliper ears and then threading them into the mounting bracket.
  6. Torque the mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Pump the brake pedal to seat the linings against the rotors.
  7. Using a pair of slip-joint locking pliers, place them on the notch on the caliper housing, bend the caliper upper ears until no clearance exists between the shoe and the caliper housing.
  8. Install the wheels, lower the vehicle and refill the master cylinder reservoirs with brake fluid. Pump the brake pedal to make sure that it is firm. If it is not, bleed the brakes.

take the wheels off the front,,remove the 2 bolts holding the brakes caliper to the caliper mount and pull off the caliper,then remove the old pads by popping them out, and the remove the 2 bolts holding the caliper mounting bracket to the hub and then remove the rotor,,,to either resurface it,,or replace it with a new one,,,the put the rotor back on(new one) install the mounting bracket and pads and press the caliper piston in with a pliers and then put it back onto the mounting bracket and then tighten all bolts,and do the other side,,pump up brakes and youre good to go
