Question about Ford Escape

3 Answers

I have a 2003 Ford Escape XLT. It was running good. One day I turned it on and when I put it on D nothing happened. Nothing happens when I put it on RND12. Does somebody could help me and tell me what is the problem? I checked the transmission liquid and it's fine. Note: I changed the alternator a few months ago. Thanks..

Is it possible that the transmission be broken?

  • Michael Aziza Nov 13, 2009

Yes, the truck rolls after I put it in a gear. Also When I put it in a gear, the inside lights like the clock of the radio, reduce his intensity and seems like the truc is going to go out (turn off). I have been having problems with the battery and the energy in the suv. I think the alternator is not sending the correct energy. Could be this the cause of my problem?

This transmission is electronically controlled so the very 1st thing u need to do is have the transmission control module tested for fault codes, this will give direction to what the problem is, it could be as simple as a defective transmission electrical connector or range selector switch to a transmission hydraulic failure from a defective high pressure pump inside the transmission, but the fault code test is crucial to locating the cause of this failure. I strongly suggest you have a Ford dealer do these tests, they have all the right equipment to test this transmission and can go u the much faster than a outside shop. I am a 25 year veteran Ford dealer technician so I do have 1st hand knowledge of this kind of problem.

Any problem in the electrical system that does what you discribe can cause this, it sounds like you may have a shorted shift solenoid, that is why the test is so important I advised you to have done.

Does the truck roll after you put it in gear, like as if it was in neutral? If so,the shift cable is broken,or has come loose at the transmission, check this and go from there. If the shift cable is fine, check to see if the shift lever is moving around the shift shaft coming out of transmission.I hope this was helpful,if so,please let us know, thank you.

On these electricaly controlled automatic transmissions there are shift solenoids that engage the transmission into gear. Unfortunately a dealer or qualified transmission repair shop will need to be employed in order to retreive the transmission computer's trouble codes to more adequately narrow down what the issue is, of course before doing this check the obvious things, make sure that the transmission fluid is up to the correct level (check with engine running) check all fuses, and you might want to get under the vehicle to inspect the wiring going into the transmission make sure no wires are broken or disconnected.

Have the battery checked. Have your Ignition key checked or use a different key. The ignition switch could be worn out in the RUN position.

The anti-theft usually comes on when power is less than optimum or the identity of the key is corrupted.

Sounds like it could be a sticky brake on one of the rear wheels. this would only happen after the car has stood still for a while, nothing to worry about if this is the case but if you want it to stop you can inspect the rear calipers or ask a mechanic to check them.

I have a 2003 Ford Escape. When I put it on any gears apart of P, nothing happens. What could be the problem?

Check the transmission fluid, often times when the transmission fluid runs low the transmission will not engage into drive or reverse. Check the fluid with the engine running.
