Hi,
Speedometer will always read faster than your actual speed, but your odometer will read true mileage.
have sat nav into your car to be more sure about your real speed.Measuring error depends on many obstacles, such as, tyres (put lower profile, and here you go, speed is higher than in reality and vice versa).
On official reviews they say that there is approx 5% difference between real speed and actual where actual is lower.
But for your peace of mind, for other manufacturers, difference tends to be higher.
If you have climatronic, push the fan speed down, blue temp, and ECON buttons at the same time. Then use the red temp button to go to channel 16. That is the vehicle speed. You will notice it is considerably lower than the speedometer.
the odos are nearly always correct. All this is measured with both Garmin GPS and several speedo checks along the roads.
It is not bad engeenering, it`s made on purpose, because what the law says, and it should also apply when you changes tires to another approved dimention
Thanks for contacting fixya.com

One of two things is wrong.
1) vehicle speed sensor is bad, or
2) Speedometer head is bad (speedometer it self)

If you have no check engine light on, chances are its the speedometer.

Speedometer is not registering the correct speed. It indicates 100MPH when I am actually only going 65MPH

You need a new instrument cluster my friend. But check with your local dealer first to make sure that there isn't a current software calibration for correction of this problem.

My ford mustang speedometer not working properly,I am going about 50mph and it shows me going about 100mph

This is pretty common on the 2005 Mustangs, it's caused by failing stepper motors in the instrument cluster, they control the movement of the gauges. There's a guide on how to fix them here - 2005 Mustang speedometer problem

Speedometer does not work properly

I have not heard of this before but I do know there is such a wide spread problem with the cluster (speedo) GM has extended warranty on several years and I expect they will add more years as time goes by.

Many of the problems I encounter have been speedo's showing a faster speed than actual, 100mph plus.

Good Luck
