3 weeks ago my car would not start, replaced battery and it has been fine till tonight and it would not start.

3 days on a new battery, yes it is significant. Four things can do this in a short time. alternator, starter, radio, and interior lights/ light switch. Alternator can be checked on the car, A sign for the starter is that it may drag or drag sometimes. Radio is lights staying on after the door is opened,Even the clock. Light switch is interior lights don't work or the dimmer switch doesn't work. These are just suggestions that I have run across. They still need to be checked. It can get costly.

This behaviour is typical of worn starter motor main contacts, at the bottom of the starter solenoid.

Not starting

This may be due to a bad battery or starter, first have the battery tested , the battery is located inside the bumper area, you will need to remove tire and cover to get to battery, start there, good day

Turn ignition key to start and no response or sounds. battery fully charged. after a few attempts, hear a dragging sound and vehicle starts.

the sarter motor must be taken out and checked out well as it seems that the sarter motor bush/bearings/pinion wheel and be worn out. The noise is the wrong aligment of the pinion to the flywheel and it gets worse when the starter bushes wear off.
Also the cranking speed will be dragging as the load is high and with a good starter the cranking will be smooth and faster.

Starting Problem

Probably a bad starter as well. A good battery can make a marginal starter work, but over time the battery will be weakened by the drain of the starter or the starter will get worse.

Remove the starter and take it to your local parts store for testing and replacement. Bring your battery along as the bad starter might have toasted it.

Also a bad battery can wear out a starter quickly.

We had issues like this with our pickup truck a few years back. Replaced the battery, worked okay for a while, then the replaced the starter, worked okay for a while, then the battery was bad. Eventually replaced both and haven't had any issues since.

So when replacing one it is a good idea to check the other.

Battery seems dead but lights and everything electrical seems fine smoke comes from battery if you jump it

Okay, what you seem to be saying is the battery does not turn over the engine and the battery smokes when you jump it to start it. But the lights and radio and everything works except the car will not turn over by itself. The battery smokes because either the battery has a short in it, it smokes because the starter is dragging, and/or the jump wires are not hooked up red to red and black to black. You need to have the battery and starter checked. If the car runs take it to an autoparts place to test. Or if it won't run take out the battery have it tested and if it is good, then take out the starter to test it.

There's your problem. You need to replace the alternator again. Please check out the instructions with the alternator.

And could you please give me a "problem solved" rating -- there should be icons below.

thanks...
