You can but not recommended. the reason for the thinner oil is the tolerances in the bearing races on these engines are very tight, requiring thinner oil. 5w30 is ok for sure if you are going synthetic.

Once you start using synthetic, you MUST continue to use synthetic. If you switch from synthetic to regular oil, you will have problems with seals melting. The chemistry only works well, one way. I've been to many specialty seminars about lubricants and no mater who did the seminar, the information was alwasy the same rule.

Can you use 5w20 instead of 5w30 engine oil when they reccomend 5w30

Use only the oil weight on the oil cap or owners manual if the cap does not list the oil weight. Most older vehicles called for eather 10w30 or 5w30 depending on the ambient temp. In the past 10 or so years, manufacturers updated engines for better fuel efficiency by tightening tolerances in the engines, thereby needing a lighter oil weight to provide sufficient lubrication for the parts So manufacturers started requiring 5w20 oil in their engines. I work as an Auto Care Technician at Walmart, and we will NOT do an oil change for any weight other than the recommended weight by the manufacturer. If it calls for 5w20, we use 5w20, regardless of what the owner wants. This is to avoid any possible engine oil related problems. People will blame someone else if they have a warranty issue the dealer refuses to honor for whatever reason, and it would go back to the last place the vehicle had the oil changed at. So therefore at Walmart, we follow the manufacturers recommended oil weight for all oil changes.

What kind of oil does my 2005 town and country use?

it depends if its the 3.3 liter or the 3.8 liter. one of the motors is 5w30 and the other is 10w30 but to ensure this is correct. Look on your oil filler cap and it will display what oil you need to put in. Also make sure you buy the oil that you have been using. Like if you use synthetic you want to use synthetic oil or vice versa.

I have a 2006 chrysler town and country and it is losing antifreeze somewhere - can smell it when shutting off vehicle but can't see a leak anywhere. Any ideas? I checked the oil and it looks clear so sure...

Look for traces of a light pink residue around the bottom of the waterpump and the radiator core support. The waterpump is near the firewall on the passenger side. If you still can't find the source of the leak you will have to have the system pressure tested. I hope this helps.
