Fairly easy. Just drain oil, drop pan, remove pump. You can go to autzone.com and register for full free online repair manual with everything you could need.

HOW TO REPLACE WATER PUMP 2001 explorer sport 4.0


Disconnect the battery, locate the idler bracket that adjust the tension on the belt. Loosen the bracket and unhook the belt off of the Idler bracket(no need to remove belt unless in the way) Remove water pump when car is cooled down. Loosen bolts that hold the water pump on and remove pump. Put new one on and reverse process. Replace your antifreeze/ water. Start car for thirty seconds. Stop car, look for leaks and top off antifreeze. Done deal.

The pumps are normally in the sump and is driven by the cam or a gear on the front gear train. Some form part of your filter assembly.
Low oil pressure is not only the pump but could be from another place where oil flows and should be repaired first.

OIL PUMP IN THE OIL PAN.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE OIL PAN TO REPLACE OIL PUMP.IF YOU HAVE 4.6L ENGINE YOU HAVE TO REMOVE FRONT TIMING CHAIN COVER AND TIMING CHAIN.REMOVE OIL PAN.REMOVE THREE BOLTS AND THE OIL PUMP SCREEN COVER TUBE AND REMOVE OIL PUMP.YOU NEED TO SUBMERGE NEW OIL PUMP IN CLEAN ENGINE OIL TO PRIME IT.

You will have to pull out the motor. Remove the both oil pans, intake and cylinder heads. Plus you will need a whole bunch of special tools.

What is the fuel pump relay number in the fuse box of a 2001 explorer sport? is there another relay in there i can switch to see if the pump relay is bad?


you can find the location of this relay from the owners manual, if you don't have one you can download one from fleet.ford.com, or try your local library. The A/C relay, horn, and Fuel pump relays are all the same. Hope this helps, let me know
