Question about 2001 Saturn SC

2 Answers

Hi all. I am at my wits ends with a problem with my saturn. i have owned it for 4 mths now and this problem i have been having has been about 3 mths now. let me start with my symptoms... i have RKE and i lock the door, come back to the car and the RKE isnt wroking. The stereo has no power, no interior lights, no real power for extras. but the car tries to start. i can get it started but it stalls shortly after and runs with a bad shake. im gathering that the "no power" is affecting the fuel pump too. throughout the day i get this several times and i can tell when its going to start happening because i start getting shocks whenever i get outta the car. which gets stronger and more annoying throughout the day. if i push around on the fuse panel, i can usually get all the symptoms to go away and the car starts running like nothing ever happened. i have changed the battery, starter, disassembled the fuse panel and did not see any problems. my hubby and i have spent many hrs going trough wiring looking for any open wires and still the problem persist. any ideas would greatly be appriciated!! thx in advance Dothedew

ty for a quick response...1)car battery fully charged
2)as far as i can hear, all systems a go. but this problem happens randomly, and right now its not doing it.(i use car for work, so i can guarantee in the 9 hrs of work tomorrow, it will happen so i will do more listening.3)Engine fuses were checked and all good 4)cabin fuses all checked all good 6)RKE battery changed on friday last 7)been to the saturn dealer and they have no clue(they even went on their online help and couldnt find anything)
its seems when the problem occurs, if i push around on the dash fuse area, the problem usually stops almost immediately, i get shocks throughout the day that start off small and progress to large and thats when i know this problem is gonna start. hubby is going through the wiring under the tilt steering as we speak. he has also checked the ignition brain under the key plume. so alot has been checked just not making headway....any other ideas?? ty appriciated

Hi,

My sympothy goes out to you !

First, things first....

Ensure the battery is in full charge state (if not, fully charge it); disconnect battery cables, clean both cable & battery terminals, then re-attach and tighten. Ensure any in-line fuses on the + (red) battery cable are secure. Check that the MAIN POWER fuse in the Engine fusebox is in good condition and secure.

If you can find a quiet spot (inside garage), turn off all accessories, then turn key to the "ON" position (not start) - listen for a whirring sound - this means there is power getting to your fuel pump.

Your Radio, interior lights and other accessories often run on the same 10A fuse - found in the cabin fusebox.

Your RKE remote battery may be getting weak, which could cause intermittent operation.

Your vehicle has an onboard diagnostic computer which monitors approx. 80% of your vehicle's electrical components/devices.

Many of your vehicle's engine, emission & accessory devices are linked in some way, so if one (or more) components are having issues, this can disrupt the computer's readings....and cause havoc to engine operation.

If you are experiencing an intermittent power feed, this can also disrupt your onboard computer: operating parameters will be out of sync, causing rough running, until the computer re-learns your driving pattern.

So, before you go any further, I recommend you first have your vehicle's computer scanned by your local Saturn/GM Dealership to extract actual fault codes that may be stored (i'm 90% certain there will be some codes present) - you can then rectify these issues to start with.

If these are sorted and you still suffer electrical problems, then you may need the help of your local Automotive Electrician to identify any intermittent shorts in the wiring.

** If this has helped you in any way, please rate this solution ***

Cheers,

    Hi again,

I'm rather concerned that Saturn dealer had no idea...!!!@#!??

Can you please confirm if Saturn dealer even checked your onboard diagnostics???

As hubby appears to be technically savvy, I'd like to provide him with some instructions to see if he himself can access your vehicle's computer - it will involve jumping 2 wires on the Data link connector.

Let me know if he's keen to try this....

Well you're definitely on the right track , if it's in the area of the you fuse Area I would say that your very close to identifying something is grounding out directly in that area or attached to the other side of the fuse connections on the firewall or as I said the tilt wheel I had this issue myself at one point to where the car would start by itself ...It was due to wires rubbing together in the tilt wheel even the lights would come on at all hours of the night

I read the comment above mine and I believe he is correct referring you towards computer diagnostics run at this point before you truly wind up with more damage to the system or perhaps a fire which I've also experienced...would love to know what you find out in the end.

screws on the top of the dash in the Saturn. Then pry the dashboard up and away. This may seem like a pain to get to, but it's a must if you want to fix the heater blower motor resistor.

Hi,
No this should not continue to happen. Yet ------
you will need to have the CODE scanned to find out what malfunction tripped the engine light. Most parts houses do a FREE code scan. Not to get to nervous about this. Your cars computer is very forgiving and works around these engine light issues as not to hurt your engine. That said, It is good to repair the malfunction as you will get better performance from your engine. So you are on the right track. Good Luck !!!!
