Change the oil and filter, and change the air filter, note, use a name brand on the air filter, wix, napa gold,or name brand.Air flow is part of this exhaust emissions.Run a tank of high test premium, with some octane boost,to clean out the cylinders, and injectors,if there are a lot of miles on the car, replace the spark plugs. But use ac delco, platium plugs only.

Normally is this due to incorrect mixture of air and gasoline. For those non-EFI, you may need to adjust the air and fuel mixture by adjusting the 2 screws on the carb. Check as well the timing of the engine and inspect the spark plug. It should be brown in color. Other colors would reflect wrong timing, soaked plugs may mean too much fuel intake. Check for vacuum leaks.

For EFI's, using a scanner check if there is any error code. Check the oxygen sensor and the MAP sensor on the engine if they are running correctly as these two parts tell how many fuel is needed by the engine. Check also for vacuum leaks and timing.

Why are my emissions test-HC(ppm) and CO(%) high?

High HC means its running rich, high CO usually means your Catalytic converter is clogged or inefficient. There are many reasons for this but in my experience the main one is a faulty O2 sensor giving the wrong signal to the ECU. You should have noticed that your fuel consumption had increased (or your miles per gallon had decreased) at about the same time yourO2 sensor failed. It is worth getting a diagnostic check done on your vehicle to try and confirm this. Suspect new cat needed but you still need to find the cause otherwise you will ruin your new cat

What causes co & hc readings to high

HC is raw or un burnt fuel. CO is incomplete combustion meaning the air fuel is burnt but not burnt completely. check O2 sensors for operation, fuel pressure, gas in oil or how long has it been since an oil change. check engine timing, dirty injectors. when was the last time a tune-up was done plug/wire condition is the air filter clean. just some things to check

Need 92 toyota paseo to pass CA smog test ! What causes too high HC in smog test????

High HC means moisture in the system. Try driving it longer then take it to the smog shop. Otherwise it could be hard like a head gasket or easy such as a PCV not functioning. Any ways you should always drive it about 20 miles before smog check, longer when the weather is cold.

1991 Honda Accord LX failed emission test on smog test. High CO and HC on 25mph

not enough info. Typically, CO and HC together can be the result of poor fuel control or misfire, or worn components such as O2 sensor or catalytic converter, but without more data, repair recommendations are likely to waste money and not achieve success.
