If you are getting 18 miles per gallon you are doing very well. The normal MGP is 14-17 miles per gallon, so no problems there. Is the transmission fluid at the proper level? When was the last time your transmission fluid was changed?

How can I repair high fuel consumption problem in my car? Will the change of fuel filter make fuel consumption better and solve this problem?

what motor do u have in the car , there are only a small number of things you can do to help this , a good tune up , K&N air filter , headers ,good tires with proper air . make the car lighter depending on the size of your motor these are the main things you can but if you have a big block motor in yout car , get another car , if you have a 4 cyl already , you really are getting good milage per gallon , get a bike if you are a cheap skate

you should not drive with fuel light on you will burn your pump out but the light comes on with 3 gallons of gas left so 40 miles in town 60 miles on the highway but I would not do it.

Very slow to kick in to reverse, first and second gears accompanied by high revving sound. Not a smooth transition to other gears as well. High revving until going. Very high fuel consumption as well. Once...

it sounds like your transmission is slipping. they make this chemical you can get at a part store, its a transmission stabalizer. it should help with the grinding noise and transitions to the other gears. also give your truck a complete tune up (oil change, fuel and air filters, spark plugs etc.) it should help with the fuel consumptions.

Tramission confort and power switch What is this switch for? It is located on the consoule of my used new to me and I do not know what to do with this nor what it is used for. Any info on this would be...

The function of that switch is to change the gear ratio. If you keep it on COMFORT then the car will run smooth actually this smootheness is cuz the gear changes rapidly & results in smooth engine sound & also economical in fuel & while the other hand the POWER switch will change the gear at high RPMs & therefore more engine noise & more fuel consumption.

High fuel consumption

change o2 sensors every 60,000 miles and use iridium plugs they will outlast engine.
check engine light will not come on until sensors are completely shot, this also goes for your mass air flow, had same issues with 99 beetle happened at 80,000 miles, changed all three items ended up with 35mpg after getting 24mpg before fix.parts are cheap on ebay.

Yes, GENTLY break the motor in to about 1k miles after that, change the oil/filters and you will slowly see an increase in your mpg. I had the same problem with mine. Now has 60k on new motor and I get a consistent 20mpg on the hwy. City mileage is about 12.
