Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

1 Answer

2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 87000 miles 2001 Mit. Eclipse GT auto. tran. w/ sport shift. Without any previous symptoms, the trans. stop putting power to the wheels. While driving in ''D'', the rpm's went up and I was coasting. No gears work (D or R). It sounds and feels as if it is trying to go into gear, but only rev.s up, no power to the wheels. It will shift into ''N'' because I can push it. Any ideas since no earlier symptoms? Clogged trans. filter? Some hose disconnect? Or complete Transaxle shot? Thanks! -> non-mechanic here.

SOURCE: 2001 mitsubishi eclipse. Automatic transmission

Transmission may be low on transmission fluid or the transmission fluid pump failed. If it's electrical, you can still get it in to gear, but would not shift gears. Good luck and keep me posted, check transmission fluid level and have the transmission line pressure tested. Before that check all your fuses.

I think at 156 your trans is due for a rebuild

Real simple

Has the fluid been changed every 3 years or 30 to 40,000
miles since new? If not your done, worn out clutches

That goes for every vehicle in the world that are automatics

You have a check light, that should be something your familiar
with, so get the codes & proceed as you have in the past &
diagnose the system fault.

The code may be a different issue & not the trans problem

Personally having once owned a trans repair shop at 156,000
I would just pull the trans & rebuild it or install a reman

You need to do the trans fluid and power steering every 30,000 miles on all vehicles. Forget what they say
I used to own a trans shop.
Flush Brake fluid every two years
Coolant every three
Spark Plugs at 60,000 miles
Fuel Filter 30,000 miles.

I would stay far away from the dealer
Go to a local shop
