Question about 1999 Ford Escort
The Service engine light means you should check all the fluids(anti-freeze, oil) It May also signal problems internal to the engine. Auto Zone will run a free computer check if there is one near you. They usually will help check fluids as well.

Hi, this means that the car has done so many miles since the last service, its basically just a reminder to say its time to have a service, this warning is mile related and doesnt mean their is anything wrong with the engine so dont worry to much, you could have serviced the car yesterday but not reset the trip computer that counts how many miles left till next service, so its just a general warning saying you have done this many miles its time for a service,
But the light could also mean low oil, water ,gearbox oil etc so all this would need checking just to make sure their is no low fluid levels causing the warning light you have got.
Now the problem you have is that on some cars you can turn the key a certain way or hold some buttons down whilst switching the ignition to reset this light, but as you may have guessed you cant do this on fords, now if the car has not had a service for a while then it would be a good idea to get this done, now if a garage does it they will reset the light for you, but if you do the work yourself then you need to take your car somewhere like halfords or auto tech depending on where you live, now they shouldnt charge for resetting this light.
So if you just want it turning off then try findind small garage that can do this for you, but please check all fluid levels such as oil/water/gearbox oil/powesteering etc just to rule out any problems their, if their is a problem like that and you got the light reset then the light would just come back on again.
So if all looks ok then the chances are its just the trip computer telling you service due.
Hope that i have given you enough info to give you an idea of what you need to do.
Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

I have the same car and if the gas cap is loos for any reason the service engine light will come on so check that. If it is it will turn off in a few days after you tighten it.

SOURCE: service engine light
you have to have the code read at a garage equiped with scanner to retrieve and eventually erase the code your car is running on safe mode not the best setup

This means it's time for a service..But have it diagnosed with a computer and maybe sometimes resetting it solves this problem. If the light comes back again then you need a servicing of the engine.

this light means that a fault has occured in the electronic engine and/or emission control system, any time this light is turned on there is a trouble code set into the memory of the Powertrain control module, PCM for short, there are over 200 poss problems that turn this light on.
