Just because the fans come on that doest mean that there is no problem if your thermostat is not operating correctly this could make your engine over heat also while your at flush yout coolant system really good.

58 plate 2.0 Mondeo . Engine warning light came on took to garage they put it on a diagnostic and thought was cured .

The warning light more times than not is coming on because of the emission system. There are several sensors that are hard to diagnose even for a professional with a computer. First place to start which is cheap and easy is to use a fuel treatment for a few tanks of gas. This has worked for me in the past by cleaning out the fuel injectors and fuel system. From there if this does not work you will have to check O2 sensors everywhere they are and replace.

How do I turn off engine management warning light without taking it to a garage ?

Normally you would remove the fuse supplying power to the car's computer, for 30 seconds. However the light will just come back on again, because the computer is sensing a problem and trying to tell you.

First thing to do is find a new mechanic. Check that the fan comes on when the engine gets to operating temperature. Blow out the radiator core from the engine side to get rid of bugs and other debris. Make sure the radiator cap seal is in good shape. Check the spark plug wiring to see if one might have fallen off of a plug. If the check engine light is on, take the car to Autozone or a similar business that allows free scanning of your engine computer and read out any stored codes. Use these codes to pursue any problems, or at least know if your mechanic is feeding you bs. Hope this helps!

best advice here is too take it to a volvo garage and let a dealer fitter have a look who will have all the experiance necessary ,never put a lot of faith into RAC fitters or the AA because most of them are all failed mechanics that do not like dirty hands

try the air filter first and the intake.the spark plugs then and after all go to a garage for checking compression timing and the head gasket.

Emissions warning light came on. Car runs great

It may be the computer itself. If the light keeps returning, either the computer is faulty or the fans are really failing. I do not recommend dealers but actual mechanic shops.

Lambda probe fault possibly

I bought a 2000 polo 1.4 yesterday after having an MOT. The warning lamp came on today but the car is running fine. Whether its the Lambda sensor or just the light itself is a common fault, I think garages turn off the lights to get it through the MOT then they come on again in a day or two!

You have damaged the exhaust carbon trap most likely, you might try resetting the light and running it for a week and see if it clears itself, you may get lucky
