I would start by replacing plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. If you're not getting enough spark this would fix those problems.

I ran out of gas. Put in gas. Now it's turning over but not starting. Should I change the plugs.

If your fuel pump is in the gas tank the fuel pump is cooled and lubricated by the gas. If you run out of gas and keep trying to start it many times you can damage the fuel pump. If you have a older car you can try putting a little gas in the carburetor and see if it cranks, if it cranks with gas in carburetor you know it is a lack of fuel problem. You might try spraying starting fluid in air filter but to much can damage your engine. Some links below may provide some help.

Your vehicle fuel pump can run and pump gas but depending on your vehicle you may not have enough fuel pressure to run. I would check your fuel pump fuse and relay and fuel inertia switch/fuel pump kill switch if you have one. I do not know why running out of gas would cause them to fail but it is something to check.

My '99 chevy truck with 5,7L 350 will start but wont stay running. put new fuel pump and relay switch in

First you must determine if the fuel is stopping or the spark is stopping..If the fuel is stopping this could be a computer problem.. If the spark is stopping then it could be the IGN Module in the distributer. or any nomber of sensors. Squirt a little fuel directly into the Throttle body on the intake manifold.. If the truck runs longer its probably loss of fuel.. Do this several times to make sure, be careful and only use a small amounty of fuel.. you do not want a fire.. RE: Spark: Take a plug wire and an old plug..put the wire on the plug.. hold the plug against a good ground .. have someone crank the engine .. does the plug stop firing? The engine dies.. and will not restart for a minuet or so.. during this "no start" time do the plug test. If the plug will not fire during this time take the module out and take it to Orillys Auto parts.. They can test it.. really expensive part. Don't replace until you know it is BAD..

Fuel pumps problems

It sounds like it may be getting burned out. Does the fuel pumps themselves go bad?

1996 bronco starting

Need to find out if there is spark while cranking first. Check at the coil wire first then at a plug wire.If there is spark at the coil and not at the plug the fault is the rotor or dist. cap.If there is no spark at all, suspect the ign. module. If there is good spark move on to the fuel pressure check. It needs about 40 lbs. to run.

2001 ford taurus with the 3.0 after sitting a few hours when i go to start will crank and crank and crank for what seems like ever, will start easily after that but when i go to start it for the first time...

Its not the oil, increasing temperature will thin out the oil. If it cranks easily but won't start it could be the spark plugs or the spark plug wires. When they heat up, especially if they are old, they won't perform well. Pull off one of the wires and hold it close to the plug, try to crank the engine and look for a spark. If it sparks them try removing a plug and check to see if it looks wet. If its bone dry it might not be getting fuel.

My 1998 chevy z71 truck will turn over but will not start

If the truck turns over, but will not start. The most common problem is the fuel pump. When you turn the key to the ON position, you should hear the fuel pump run for about 2 seconds. You may have to open the gas cap to hear it. If you can't hear it with the gas cap off, then that is going to be your problem. They are in the top of the fuel tank. And they are not real easy to change. You either have to drop the fuel tank or take the bed off. I personally take the bed off. It is a lot easier if you have a couple of people to help you. Dropping the tank is no fun at all. Plus it makes getting the ring that holds the fuel pump in a lot more difficult to get off.

Only starts half the time

If it cranks and you got fuel pump and filter changed, then have a look at the ignition components also, like spark plugs, coils, spark plug wires. also make sure the wiring for the fuel pump is not loose or anything. Hope it helps and let me know if you need more advice. Please don't forget to rate the answer it helps with my rating, thanks!

Takes multiple times to start

I think you have a faling fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator allowing fuel pressure to bleed down when the engine is off.
Try this test - When you start the car for the first time of the day, turn the key to "ON", wait a few seconds, turn the key off. Wait about 15 seconds, turn the key to "ON" again, wait a few seconds. Then wait one final time for 1 seconds and try starting the car. If it starts right away, that means fule pressure is bleeding of due to a bad check vavle int he fuel pump, a bad fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator.

The reason for the procedure is because when you turn the key to "ON", the fuel pump runs for 2 seconds and then shuts off if the engine is not running. The 15 seconds wait is for the power and fuel pump relay to cycle off before it will run the pump again.

Let us know how the test comes out. The fuel pump is in the fuel tank and hums when it is running.
