alt="What does this mean?"> What does this mean? Tech notes As the code description implies the P0420 code means that the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. If the P0420 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.
alt="What does this mean?"> What does this mean? When is the code detected? If a condition exists which causes the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to detect excessive Bank 1 HO2S #2 activity outside of an acceptable range for an extended period of time, the PCM will set the P0420 code. This indicates that the three-way catalytic converters oxygen storage capacity is below a threshold considered acceptable. Possible symptoms - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) P0420 Chevrolet Description In order to maintain a reasonably low emissions of Hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), the engine controls system uses a three-way catalytic converter. The catalyst within the converter promotes a chemical reaction which oxidizes the HC and CO present in the exhaust gas. This reaction converts them into harmless water vapor and Carbon Dioxide. The catalyst also reduces NOx, converting it to Nitrogen. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors this process using Bank 1 HO2S #2. Bank 1 HO2S #2, located in the exhaust stream past the three-way catalytic converter, produces an output signal which indicates the oxygen storage capacity of the catalyst. This determines the catalysts ability to convert exhaust emissions effectively. If the catalyst is functioning correctly, the Bank 1 HO2S #2 signal will be far less active than that produced by Bank 1 HO2S #1.

My 2003 altima has a check engine light for about 2 weeks. I just started getting my battery and brake lights fluttering.hooked computer up to it. It said code p0420 catalytic converter low threshold.

Very common code on the Altima. You will need to replace your manifold/converter. There is also some concern over the converter material getting back into your engine causing further damage. You need to take care of this asap. IT WILL NOT BE AN 02 SENSOR!! Please don't let anyone tell you otherwise. for further information google QR25DE converter issue and happy reading. Many guys have replaced their converters with a header for piece of mind.

Po422code coming up

Hi there:

DTC P0422 Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
A vehicles' catalytic converter (catalyst) helps improve tailpipe emissions by oxygenating the exhaust gasses. It helps convert hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) into water vapor (H20), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and Nitrogen (N).

The PCM (Powertrain control module) monitors the catalyst efficiency by means of a post-catalyst Oxygen sensor. This sensor is used primarily for this purpose. It should switch much slower than the front oxygen sensors. If at any point the PCM detects that the post-catalyst o2 sensor is switching too rapidly (indicating no change between the inlet and outlet of the catalytic converter) it interprets this as a catalyst that isn't functioning properly.

Bank 2 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.

Symptoms of a P0422 DTC may include:
Increased tailpipe emissions
MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination

Potential causes of a P0422 code include:
Bad or non-functional catalyst
Engine operating out of optimal air:fuel ratio

Possible Solutions: Catalytic converters contain precious metals like platinum, palladium, rhodium among others. Basically, the cheaper the cat, the less precious metals used. It should be noted that there are some automobile makes that are very finicky when it comes to catalytic converters and the logic that the PCM uses to monitor them. Just because the parts guy says it will work doesn't mean that it will. The reason is that the engineering of the vehicle was done with a high quality catalyst in mind and it can't be replaced with a low cost catalyst. There are also different kinds of catalysts. Some makes will allow for a cheaper catalyst while others simply will not. Toyotas & Subarus are the most notorious for this. Subarus require CARB certified catalysts to keep the check engine light off and won't tolerate an aftermarket catalyst, no matter how expensive.

So basically if you have a recurrence of this code after replacing the catalyst with an aftermarket catalyst, this may be your problem. If you have this code and haven't replaced the cat, there's basically two likely causes: The catalyst is no good, or the engine is running out of optimal air:fuel ratio. A tune up or engine repair may correct it. Otherwise you'll need to replace the catalyst.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

The vsc light and the trac off light and check engine light all came on at the same time code p0420 comes up on my 2005 highlander what does this mean?

A p0420 sets after Engine and catalyst are warmed up, vehicle driven within set vehicle engine speed range and waveforms of heated O2 sensors bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 1 sensor 2 have the same amplitude.
Catalytic convertor and O2 sensors need to be tested

The obd II code is po 430. what does that have to do with the catalyst system or emmission?

PO430--Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

On your vehicle ,that would be a bad exhaust converter
on the drivers side

Bank 1 would be where the #1 cylinder is
Bank 2 the opposite on a V6 or V8

Your converter is about 12 or 13 years old
They should last about 12 to 15 in my opinion

I would replace both converters and both O2
Sensors--if they have 100,000 miles on them

The Catalyst is the material inside that converts
the exhaust gases to Water Vapor, H2O, and reduces
HC,CO,and NOX

Light just came on when started vehicle. Another code followed P0430. Vehicle seems to run fine. thanks

P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2

The ECM or PCM monitors the switching frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 and 2.

A three way catalyst converter(Manifold) with high oxygen storage capacity will indicate a low switching frequency of heated oxygen sensor 2. As oxygen storage capacity decreases, the heated oxygen sensor 2 switching frequency will increase.

When the frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 and 2 approaches a specified limit value, the three way catalyst (Manifold) malfunction is diagnosed.

Possible Causes:
- Three way catalyst converter Bank 2
- Exhaust tube
- Intake air leaks
- Fuel injectors may be faulty
- Fuel injector leaks
- Spark plugs may be faulty
- Improper ignition timing
- Engine Control Module

Possible Solutions:
The most common cause it the three way catalyst converter Bank 1.

If the P0430 is combined with other DTC's try fixing those first and this code may clear.

Hello, VSC, Trac OFF and Check Engine lights turn on when i was driving. Whats means ? In Autozone said me that problem is with the catalyst system. Thanks for your advise.

when ever the check engine light is turned on for any reason the vsc and trac light also comes on to let you know they are not working, whenever the engine light is on the other systems can not operate if the engine is not working correctly, so its programed to shut down the trac and vsc when the engine light is on. the catalyst system means the catalic converter is no longer cleaning the exhasut to specs, this is caused by a weak bad converter or bad o2 sensors giving false readings you will need to have the sensors checked to see if they are the problem or the converter is the problem good luck.

1997 Mercury Mountaineer What is Catalyst Efficiency Below (Bank

it means the catalyst is worn out, the efficiency is monitored by sensors, when the Cat falls below a certain reading or "threshold" the code is generating telling u that u need a new catalytic converter.

The only fault code on 2001 kia sephia is P0422, catylist threshold low.... car ran for 2 weeks fine after new fuel pump, and then just died like first time.... 126 thousnd miles and plenty of fuel, fuel...

P0422 - Catalyst below threshold.

Catalytic converter is clogged or out of medium.

Replace it.

ACTUAL DIAGNOSTIC:

Fault Code Definition
Code P0422 indicates that the Bank 1 Main Catalytic Converter's emissions efficiency has fallen below the minimum allowable limit. This threshold is tracked by a Catalyst Monitoring Oxygen Sensor located on or near the outlet of the Catalytic Converter.

Symptoms

* Check Engine Light will illuminate
* In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed

Common Problems That Trigger the P0422 Code

* Defective Catalytic Converter
* Engine misfires have damaged the Catalytic Converter
* Internal engine damage resulting in high oil consumption and/or a leaking Head gasket has damaged the Catalytic Converter

Common Misdiagnoses

* Oxygen Sensors are replaced when the real problem is a damaged Catalyst
* Catalyst is replaced when the real problem is internal engine damage, which is producing elevated emissions levels
* Catalyst is replaced when a misfiring engine is the real problem
