With a flash light look into the hole you will see the oil pump drive gear you need to turn it so that as you drop the distributor into the hole it will line up with the pump drivve. If you have timed right you can just bump the motor with the key and it will drop down and then move the distributor rotor to top dead center and be sure charnk is at the 0 mark. and your good to go, you have to have the cap off to do this. Also don't feel bad everyone has gone threw this at least once. If you still have a problem let me know.
You should be able to put it EXACTLY where it was when you pulled it out, if not you will need to line up the oil pump shaft and then drop it in. OR You will need to get #1 cyl TDC and then set the distributor rotor to number 1 cyl on the cap. If it does not go down all the way, the oil pump drive isnt lined up and you may need to line it up with a large screwdriver OR just put the dist in where it should go and then hold pressure down on it while someone spins the engine over until it drops into place. You cannot set the timing. The distributor will need to be set using a scanner and checking "CAM ******" it should be set to "0".
