I have an 1998 chev pickup truck with a 4.3 vortec. I pulled the distributor to put intake gaskets on & I can not set the distributor right. Is there something I am doing wrong. Thanks Greg

With a flash light look into the hole you will see the oil pump drive gear you need to turn it so that as you drop the distributor into the hole it will line up with the pump drivve. If you have timed right you can just bump the motor with the key and it will drop down and then move the distributor rotor to top dead center and be sure charnk is at the 0 mark. and your good to go, you have to have the cap off to do this. Also don't feel bad everyone has gone threw this at least once. If you still have a problem let me know.

You should be able to put it EXACTLY where it was when you pulled it out, if not you will need to line up the oil pump shaft and then drop it in. OR You will need to get #1 cyl TDC and then set the distributor rotor to number 1 cyl on the cap. If it does not go down all the way, the oil pump drive isnt lined up and you may need to line it up with a large screwdriver OR just put the dist in where it should go and then hold pressure down on it while someone spins the engine over until it drops into place. You cannot set the timing. The distributor will need to be set using a scanner and checking "CAM ******" it should be set to "0".

My 97 Chevy 5.7 vortec is missing on cylinders 3, 4, and 5, changed distributor cap and truck ran great for about two hours. Changed fuel filter and there was no change. New plugs and wires summer of 2012....

Well its not exactly ignition or fuel injectors, since cylinder 6 in in the firing order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Could be something with the intake again, or the pickup in the distributor. I suppose if you have the multi-port injection inside the plenium it could be some of the spider valves or lines.
You would need to know if those cylinders are firing, and if they have normal compression.

Cant get my 1999 chevy pickup with vortec 4.3 motor to fire at all

You could have got a motor from a non running vehicle. Did you use the distributor and coil from the donor vehicle, or did you transfer your distributor and coil to the used engine you bought? Check to make sure you have power going to the distributor and coil first. If you have fuel getting to the cylinders, and ignition voltage, going to the coil, you might have a problem with the distributor system. Those engines are notorious for this problem More often or not, the ignition module failed. The pickup coil in the distributor has a high failure rate too.

There is a good chance your injectors are not firing. I would suggest cranking the engine without the air filter housing on the throttle body and see if the injectors are squirting fuel. If not, I believe they are fired off a signal from the distributor pickup.

you will have to remove upper intake plenum the black plastic part there is a o-ring around the area you are speaking of. now if this engine didn,t have the intake gaskets replaced before installing now would be good time because if you keep vehicle believe me you will have to do sooner or later these engines came with plastic intake gaskets that are notorious for leaking to do this you will njeed to remove both upper and lower intake manifolds I just started a job on 99 tahoe today before lunch and customer is driving tonight replaced upper and lower intake gaskets fel-pro makes updated gaskets for this engine that has thick metal shim and rubber gaskets a great improvement that ends this problem as for your vacuum leak at opening for fuel lines don,t see often but is possible hope this helps
