With the timing belt on the vehicle install the botton piece of the timing cover with crank pulley. line up the notch on the crank pulley with 0 on the timing cover for top dead center on the crank. then there is a small sight hole in the spokes on the camshaft timing gear. with the belt off the timing gear line up that sight hole with a notch behind the gear on the cylinder head. you will only be able to see the notch through the sight hole with a mirror. once these are lined up slide the belt back on the timing gear and recheck afterward. this the procedure for all 5s-fe motors

Im changing the timing belt what is the best to find tdc on the #4 cylinder is the #4 cylinder the closest to the fire wall?

you dont even need to know, for sure, not guessing...!!!
you align the marks by the book and it only goes one way.
#4. is firing and you dont need to know, unless its not.
if not the belt has slipped. or installed wrong.

see the 6 point test. (if 4 point fails)
first all 3 engines. for your year, its 2 .
8v or 16v.

the 6 point way is here (end). if at wits end, this solves them all.
the acid tests.

the 2 extra checks are KEYS.

Timming belt broke from water pump broke while driving car put new water pump on n timming belt but car doesnt start right plus shakes doesnt sound right 2001 neon dodge

Sounds like timing belt not on correctly. Check timing marks are aligned correctly when installing timing belt. This vehicle should have 2-3 marks to be aligned when installing belt.marks should be on cam gear/ crankshaft gear and intermediate shaft if engine is equipped with it.

Align the timing marks:
  • Align the crankshaft sprocket mark to the front cover notch.
  • Align the oil pump sprocket diamond to the engine front cover diamond.
  • Align the camshaft sprocket triangle to the engine front cover triangle.

Im trying to change the timing belt and dont know how

You really need to get the Haynes or Chilton's repair manual on your vehicle from a parts store so you have the pictures and instructions to do it correctly. As far as a diagram of the timing marks and how they align you can look here:

Timing chain marks

here are the timing marks and alignment, there are two types of 2.4 engines for this year, the crank gear has a mark to align but the cam gears have alignment holes, theres a tool that goes through the holes and into the head hole to align,i made my own tool just used drift punch and a philps screw driver, something that fits holes and goes in to align gears.good luck,7389f80.gifb5a46fb.gif
