If the fluid was real dark and the car has shifting problems then the tranny is already cooked.

If it's a manual transmission you may have a bad synchro causing this or a bent shift fork. More likely a bad synchro. You can try rebuilding it but it's likely to not work.

If it's an automatic, just plan on replacing it. We mess with these up and down at the dealership and in the end the labor and parts are just cheaper to replace the tranny with a remanufactured one. Labor for diagnosis is about an hour, and labor to replace it should be about 5 hours.

Good luck.

1991 toyota tercel 1.5 automatic trans. drove to my nephews house and then back home "17 miles round trip" about half mile from home car wont shift first gear to second

Jorge, as richie46 recommended check trans, fluid level. At higher mileages,150,000 the automatic transmission may not shift correctly. This can be caused by the throttle position sensor out of adjustment or a shift solenoid needing to be replaced. Typically the transmission does not need to be completely overhauled.

Ok, i am not a european tech so here is the question.. i have a 1998 bmw 528-i that has a trans problem.. p0741 alreadt changed out the solinoid and changed fluid. but i think it got worse it would s

Given what you have said & the metal shavings

I would pull it & rebuild it

Not worth diagnosing the PO741 TCC issue as long as there
is metal, it is thru out the entire unit.

Nothing special about that trans because it is in a euro car

They use Gm Trans & the US Mfg uses Euro, across some vehicle lines & models

2001 outback automatic stall.

When you changed the ****** fluid was it brown? If so I regret to inform you, you may need a new transmission. The brown color is due to the clutches in the trans, wearing down over time. Does it shift hard when you drive it? If it does that is another sign the trans has gone out the window.

I have a 2001 mitsubishi mirage with 1.8l engine. transmission won't shift out of second gear. Go's in reverse but won't go forward until in second and won't shift out of second gear.

Is this an automatic trans?Does this mean that it just revs in 1st or drive unti it goes into 2nd?Shifts are determined by having sufficient trans fluid in.That the internal valve body is functioning, that external shift solenoids are working, and that the speed sensor on the trans as well as the TPS on the throttle body are working correctly.apart from this they do wear out internal parts and then do these types of things.
Check the transmission fluid level while idling in park with the handbrake on.also if the fluid smells burnt and/or looks dark,it is time for a rebuild.Could you supply some more info, what was the trans like on last drive prior to fault, did it just start up and do this or did it begin while driving?

Automatic transmission trouble

With so little info, you can only guess. Most computer controled transmission default to either second or third gear if there is an electrical problem.

The mitubishi trans has sensors on the trans that if they are hooked up wrong, it wont shift. If the fluid is full and clean, odds are you have an electrical problem. Could even be a fuse or the computer.

Hope this helps.

Inside the transmission case above the pan. You should probably let a transmission mechanic handle this one.
