Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf
Sounds like you have an immobiliser problem.your car probably has a transponder key.if you have a spare key,try using that one and see if it works.if not,you need to have the car put on a diagnostic machine to see what fault codes come up.have you dropped the key by any chance?if so the chip inside the key has fallen out and you need a new key coded to the vehicle...good luck
