It is an Exhaust Gas recirculation valve. I sends controlled amounts of exhaust gas, back into the engine, to be re-burned. To replace it is simple, two screws, one electrical plug, pull it out and so on. But the right way to repair it is to hook the car up to a diagnostic scan-tool, look at data, run functional tests, run component tests on the valve, and physically inspect the valve for defects.

Egr = exhaust gas recirculation valve. if the valve itself has gone bad, you replace the whole thing

Replace the egr valve and solenoid if it is the mitsubishi motor, if it is the Dodge motor, then it comes as an assembly.

SOURCE: bad egr valve

You can try cleaning it. Go to your local parts store and buy a can of brake cleaner. Remove the EGR valve and spray it into the valve and let it set 8 hours. Pour out the cleaner and clean the carbon off with a wire brush. Reinstall the valve and see if that helps. If not, you will have to buy a new one and it will not cost $316 if you DIY.

Remove the throttle body housing on the top of the intake, it is a 90 degree tunnel like small piece held by 4 small bolts, turn it over and look for two holes, these holes are for the EGR valve flow, they are probably plugged up with carboned crud, clean them out with the tip of a screwdriver if neccessary to remove all the crud, once its clean reinstall it and reset your check engine light, hope this helps, let me know

Just had my egr valve replaced in my 2004 dodge ram 1500 in late sept . Why would it be going bad already? Just had to replace the battery and rear brakes last Friday. Was told then I had to go to have...

Well first off, if your egr valve was replaced and assuming you live in the US, the component carries a mandatory 5year warranty because its an emission control device. Secondly, very often overlooked is the egr passages themselves. They re-circulate exhaust. They also re-circulate soot. This byproduct combined with oil residue from the pcv system WILL block some of the egr passages preventing the valve from performing correctly. Easy fix, done usually with a pipe cleaning device, or coat hanger. In extreme situations when the vehicle has high mileage, the intake manifold has to be removed and de-sooted/de-carbed to fix this problem.

1405/405 error code for ford ranger 1996

P1405 is an EGR code this can be caused by a bad EGR valve and vaccum selonoid and or a bad DPFE sensor and blocked or melted hoses going to the DPFE.I usally remove the EGR Valve and using a hand held vaccum pump ck the Valve to see if it opens correctly if it is then ck the DPFE hoses if they are ok . Now if the EGR valve is bad You need to replace the DPFE and the Selonoid and the valve because the Valve not working burns them up internally. If the Valve is good first replace the selonoid ... its the cheapiest .... if that doesn't fix it replace the DPFE and the hoses going to it . If you know some one with a good Scan tool it may have a EGR self test prcedure built in like mine does and makes this easier but if not i have told you how with out a scanner

Went to have my 97 skylark smoged and was was told my check engine light was not working. Tech said it has something to do with code p1406. Any suggestions?

Code p1406 is an EGR code but that has nothing to do with the light not working. Some one has probably taken the bulb out instead of fixing the EGR valve problem. You could just have a bad EGR valve or the ports under the EGR valve could be plugged with carbon . You need to remove the EGR valve to pinpoint the exhaust gas curcuit problem.

I took my moms 2001 ford taurus to be inspected. It fail due to EGR sensor.. Machnic said sensor needed to be cleaned. After taking apart he said valve was badly cloged. Soaked overnight and said it would...

I would highly suspect the "EGR backpressure sensor"
From experience and many conversations, a clooged EGR valve is almost unheard of these day. Get to an auto part store, were they can tell you what problem code(s) your car is getting, and possible good advice.
Sincerely, another 2001 Taurus owner.

How to remove egr valve on 1997 lincoln towncar

The EGR valve can be replaced by using a pipe wrench, or a standard wrench to remove the fitting over the pipe going into the EGR valve... it's not too hard to replace, I've done it on mine myself... I have a 97 town car as well... the only problem is that my EGR valve was fine, but the computer told me it was bad... But I found out that the EGR sensor was bad, not the valve... now to replace the EGR sensor you need to remove the engine... FORD in their infinite wisdom decided to put the EGR sensor on the rear of the engine, half way down next to the firewall...

My mechanic said that as long as the car is running fine, I souldnt worry about the EGR sensor, its job is to tell me when the EGR valve is bad...

Hope this helps

Engine Light On - 2006 Chrysler 300 3.5 engine

I have a 2005 Chrysler 300. The engine light comes on from time to time -- sometimes it will stay on for a week or so and then go off for at most a day or two. I had the code read yesterday and the feedback was "EGR pressure flow is low." My car has about 65K miles. Is this a typical problem with this car? I was told replacing the EGR valve would fix the problem. How easy is it to replace an EGR valve on this vehicle? Once replaced, do I need to reset the computer --- if so how do I do this? If it is easy to fix, could you please provide step by step directions and show me location of the part in question that needs replaced?
