Question about Dodge Grand Caravan

2 Answers

My 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan is having transmission problems. It "slipped" and immediately lost all gears and reverse while driving down the interstate. So far, I've replaced the speed sensors and the solenoid pack (shift solenoid). Still no improvement. The OBD codes are PO700 (Trans control system malfunction), PO740 (TCC CICT malfunction -- don't know what that is or what to do about it), PO734 (Gear 4 ratio incorrect), PO736 (reverse ratio incorrect) and PO732 (gear 2 ratio incorrect). Where should I go from here? Are there other transmission codes that should be read at this point?

Before I go purchasing another transmission, is there any other step to take? That sounds hugely expensive!

thanks for the additional feedback. We will check the TCM before taking the plunge.

Check the power source first.

Without the correct voltage to the TCM will not able to operate normally.

1) check for a warm/hot transmission power relay /////check relay socket for corrosion.

Replace it if it's warm/hot

2) check for all grounding strips/wires from battery to engine and metal frame.

If you has 14 or 16 AWG wire around then ran a temporary ground wire between the negative battery post to the TCM metal shell.

This will rule out bad ground to TCM

3) clean battery terminal

4) check voltage with engine running.
It should be 13.4V to 14.6V

5) give all wiring a quick inspection.
Check all connectors for corrosion. A can of electrical contact cleaner will help speed up the cleaning job.

6) A wiggle test on the wire harness.
Have someone stay in the drive seat to monitor the check engine light or the ODBII code reader while you gently wiggle the wiring.

If the power sources and wiring are all checked out and problem is still remain then it's logical to give a re-manufacture TCM a try.

You did not post the odometer reading on your post.

Base on 12,000 per year, you should have about 90K on the transmission.

Unless the fluid is smell burn (DARK RED) and the slipping shortly after warm up EVER TIME then you can get more miles out of it,

Go though my list to rule out bad ground connections and voltage supply to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) before order the transmission.

Wow brother you has a seroius melt down of the tranny. There is not much you can do besides replacement of the bad tranny. You pulled a control system code whitch says to me you have no more control of the internal shifting and speed control. Your other ones indicate that you did some planetary gear damage. Its screwed up and need to be replaced or repaired, Best of luck.

Lots of possibilities from a bad solenoid pack to a broken gear or blown internal seal. No way you're gonna DIY your way out of this. Get it to a shop.

Most likely the second gear section of the transmission has gone bad. There are 3 or 4 different gear sections or assemblies in an automatic transmission, when they go bad, they go bad.
